Listen to this chapter in Hebrew:

1  For the Leader; upon the Gittith. A Psalm of David.

2  O Hashem, our Lord, how glorious is Thy name in all the earth! whose majesty is rehearsed above the heavens.

3  Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings hast Thou founded strength, because of Thine adversaries; that Thou mightest still the enemy and the avenger.

4  When I behold Thy heavens, the work of Thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which Thou hast established;

5  What is man, that Thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that Thou thinkest of him?

6  Yet Thou hast made him but little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honour.

7  Thou hast made him to have dominion over the works of Thy hands; Thou hast put all things under his feet:

8  Sheep and oxen, all of them, yea, and the beasts of the field;

9  The fowl of the air, and the fish of the sea; whatsoever passeth through the paths of the seas.

tzi-POR sha-MA-yim ud-GAY ha-YAM o-VAYR or-KHOT ya-MEEM

8:9   The fowl of the air

What birds did David see passing through the Land of Israel? Israeli Ornithologists tell us that there were many. Israel is a main station of the bird migration over the three joining continents: Africa, Asia and Europe. Indeed, Jeremiah the prophet speaks of the stork knowing her appointed times of migration (8:7). Job (39:26) speaks of the Hawk’s migration when he says ”doth the hawk soar by thy wisdom, and stretch her wings toward the south?” Today, over 500 million birds from 390 different species pass through Israel’s air space twice a year. The Hula Lake Park in the Upper Galilee is a great place for bird watching in Israel today.

10  O Hashem, our Lord, how glorious is Thy name in all the earth!
