1  For the leader; on Yedutun. A psalm of David.

lam-na-TZAY-akh al y’-du-TUN miz-MOR l’-da-VID

62:1   Yedutun

Who sang these Tehillim, and where? The name Yedutun mentioned in the title of this psalm might provide some insight. In Sefer Divrei Hayamim I 25, we find a listing of positions that David gives to the Leviim as part of their service in the house of the Lord. The three main Levite families mentioned are the house of Asaf, the house of Hayman and the house of Yedutun, “who prophesied to the accompaniment of lyres, harps, and cymbals…who, accompanied on the harp, prophesied, praising and extolling Hashem” (25:1,3). The house of God in Jerusalem, which in David’s time is still only temporary, will become permanent when his son, Shlomo, builds the Beit Hamikdash on Mount Moriah. There, the Leviim will fill the steps of the Beit Hamikdash with songs of praise, musical accompaniment and rejoicing.1 comment

2  Truly my soul waits quietly for Hashem; my deliverance comes from Him.

3  Truly He is my rock and deliverance, my haven; I shall never be shaken.

4  How long will all of you attack a man, to crush him, as though he were a leaning wall, a tottering fence?

5  They lay plans to topple him from his rank; they delight in falsehood; they bless with their mouths, while inwardly they curse. Selah.

6  Truly, wait quietly for Hashem, O my soul, for my hope comes from Him.

7  He is my rock and deliverance, my haven; I shall not be shaken.

8  I rely on Hashem, my deliverance and glory, my rock of strength; in Hashem is my refuge.

9  Trust in Him at all times, O people; pour out your hearts before Him; Hashem is our refuge. Selah.

10  Men are mere breath; mortals, illusion; placed on a scale all together, they weigh even less than a breath.

11  Do not trust in violence, or put false hopes in robbery; if force bears fruit pay it no mind.

12  One thing Hashem has spoken; two things have I heard: that might belongs to Hashem,

13  and faithfulness is Yours, O Hashem, to reward each man according to his deeds.
