1  Why do nations assemble, and peoples plot vain things;

א  לָמָּה רָגְשׁוּ גוֹיִם וּלְאֻמִּים יֶהְגּוּ־רִיק׃

2  kings of the earth take their stand, and regents intrigue together against Hashem and against His anointed?

ב  יִתְיַצְּבוּ מַלְכֵי־אֶרֶץ וְרוֹזְנִים נוֹסְדוּ־יָחַד עַל־יְהוָה וְעַל־מְשִׁיחוֹ׃

3  “Let us break the cords of their yoke, shake off their ropes from us!”

ג  נְנַתְּקָה אֶת־מוֹסְרוֹתֵימוֹ וְנַשְׁלִיכָה מִמֶּנּוּ עֲבֹתֵימוֹ׃

4  He who is enthroned in heaven laughs; Hashem mocks at them.

ד  יוֹשֵׁב בַּשָּׁמַיִם יִשְׂחָק אֲדֹנָי יִלְעַג־לָמוֹ׃

5  Then He speaks to them in anger, terrifying them in His rage,

ה  אָז יְדַבֵּר אֵלֵימוֹ בְאַפּוֹ וּבַחֲרוֹנוֹ יְבַהֲלֵמוֹ׃

6  “But I have installed My king on Tzion, My holy mountain!”

VA-a-nee na-SAKH-tee mal-KEE al tzi-YON har kod-SHEE

ו  וַאֲנִי נָסַכְתִּי מַלְכִּי עַל־צִיּוֹן הַר־קָדְשִׁי׃

2:6   My king on Tzion

As opposed to Psalm 1 which heralds the ‘man’ who walks in the ways of Hashem, Psalm 2 is directed to nations and kings, rebuking those derelict peoples who reject the Lord and seek to destroy Israel. The Sages suggest various possibilities to explain to which enemy the psalm refers: Nimrod, Pharaoh, or Gog and Magog. But regardless who the enemy is, he is ultimately doomed to destruction. Hashem has chosen a king from among the children of Israel who will serve as His anointed one on Tzion, His holy mountain. Once the people of Israel conquer and settle the land, the anointed one, king of Israel, will assume the role of defender of his people and will protect Israel from harm.2 comments

7  Let me tell of the decree: Hashem said to me, “You are My son, I have fathered you this day.

ז  אֲסַפְּרָה אֶל חֹק יְהוָה אָמַר אֵלַי בְּנִי אַתָּה אֲנִי הַיּוֹם יְלִדְתִּיךָ׃

8  Ask it of Me, and I will make the nations your domain; your estate, the limits of the earth.

ח  שְׁאַל מִמֶּנִּי וְאֶתְּנָה גוֹיִם נַחֲלָתֶךָ וַאֲחֻזָּתְךָ אַפְסֵי־אָרֶץ׃

9  You can smash them with an iron mace, shatter them like potter’s ware.”

ט  תְּרֹעֵם בְּשֵׁבֶט בַּרְזֶל כִּכְלִי יוֹצֵר תְּנַפְּצֵם׃

10  So now, O kings, be prudent; accept discipline, you rulers of the earth!

י  וְעַתָּה מְלָכִים הַשְׂכִּילוּ הִוָּסְרוּ שֹׁפְטֵי אָרֶץ׃

11  Serve Hashem in awe; tremble with fright,

יא  עִבְדוּ אֶת־יְהוָה בְּיִרְאָה וְגִילוּ בִּרְעָדָה׃

12  pay homage in good faith, lest He be angered, and your way be doomed in the mere flash of His anger. Happy are all who take refuge in Him.

 

יב  נַשְּׁקוּ־בַר פֶּן־יֶאֱנַף וְתֹאבְדוּ דֶרֶךְ כִּי־יִבְעַר כִּמְעַט אַפּוֹ אַשְׁרֵי כָּל־חוֹסֵי בוֹ׃

  • This is a verse for today as we watch the “nations” gather against Israel. It’s heartbreaking to see this happening, but we’ve seen the end of the Book and we know that Hashem will prevail in the end. Till then, all we can do is pray.

    • Greetings and blessings from Finlandia nevada! – Yes, just now many, many nations are proudly becoming more and more antisemitic and even violently so! – For example Russia, Iran, EU, Turkey and so on are finding each other in their common irrational hatred.- God tells by His Bible, by His prophet Ezekiel, that a huge war is nearing to start.- But The Holy One Of Israel also tells that there is a vast burial site, a sepultura colossal, already waiting for Gog and its hordes to be buried in! -I guess, that God Almighty, knowing and arranging everything alrealy beforehand, designed that very large and huge graveyard already in the creation itself! – So, there is not even a little bit reason for to be worried ! – And now, finally, because I am a dyed-in-the -wool music fan, I want to send a musical greeting . A Brazilian ensemble sings and plays live by the Kinneret.   • I believe we can learn something about the conquering of the Land of Israel by the children of Israel from the immersion of Aharon and his sons. I understand the immersion of Aharon and his sons as being, on one level, for a representation of the
    testimony of Israel’s passing through the sea in the process of fulfillment of G-d’s covenant with Avraham. I also understand it, on this level, as being a representation of the rectification of that testimony in the re-enactment of the crossing of the Red Sea in the passing through of the Jordan River. For the full testimony of the fulfillment of G-d’s covenant with Avraham was left incomplete when Israel failed to enter the Land directly in Torah obedience. However, the rectification of the sin of unbelief in G-d, the sin of the spies, was not entirely rectified during the testimony of the crossing of the Jordan River. And this, I believe, was indicated in a special way by the immersion of Aharon and his sons.

    This first symbolically representative priestly immersion is, therefore, the head example for all immersions for all time. It was a testimony in solidarity with the immersion of all the children of Israel on Mount Sinai and with the immersion of the nation symbolically in the Red Sea. In this aspect, then, it was done in order that All Israel should be likewise, representatively, immersed. And so, to be clear, this is not to testify to the complete rectification which would or did take place at the immersion in the Jordan River. For if that were the case, there would be no need for a further immersion of the priests. In other words, if the lack of faith were completely rectified at the Jordan River crossing, then, indeed, the entrance of Israel into the Land would have been the full Messianic entrance! But it could not be so.

    Therefore, instead we must see that the failure of faith to make a direct entrance into the Land from the south, from the wilderness of Paran, the entrance that Hashem desired, was a sin that was not fully rectified even by the wanderings in the wilderness. And we must understand from this that the entrance into the Land through the crossing of the Jordan was not supposed to be a testimony of the entrance into the Land of the Righteous but of the Repentant Sinner. For this was the very testimony of the crossing of the Red Sea! It was not the testimony of G-d saving Israel in its righteousness, but G-d saving
    Israel in its state of fallenness.

    Thus for the children of Israel to enter the Land and conquer it is ultimately a testimony of conquering the heart’s own lack of faith in G-d. It is the victory of repentance. And this, immersion of Aharon and his sons, on this level, as I understand it is the testimony to this repentance on behalf of All Israel.

  • May we all pray to Adonai, our Elohiem to judge and keep in subjection His little bnei' elohahs that are part of the ruling band that are against Israel and His Annointed..
