Listen to this chapter in Hebrew:

1  [A Psalm of] praise; of David. I will extol Thee, my God, O King; and I will bless Thy name for ever and ever.

2  Every day will I bless Thee; and I will praise Thy name for ever and ever.

3  Great is Hashem, and highly to be praised; and His greatness is unsearchable.

4  One generation shall laud Thy works to another, and shall declare Thy mighty acts.

5  The glorious splendour of Thy majesty, and Thy wondrous works, will I rehearse.

6  And men shall speak of the might of Thy tremendous acts; and I will tell of Thy greatness.

7  They shall utter the fame of Thy great goodness, and shall sing of Thy righteousness.

8  Hashem is gracious, and full of compassion; slow to anger, and of great mercy.

9  Hashem is good to all; and His tender mercies are over all His works.

10  All Thy works shall praise Thee, O Hashem; and Thy saints shall bless Thee.

11  They shall speak of the glory of Thy kingdom, and talk of Thy might;

12  To make known to the sons of men His mighty acts, and the glory of the majesty of His kingdom.

13  Thy kingdom is a kingdom for all ages, and Thy dominion endureth throughout all generations.

14  Hashem upholdeth all that fall, and raiseth up all those that are bowed down.

so-MAYKH a-do-NAI l’-KHOL ha-no-f’-LEEM v’-zo-KAYF l’-KHOL ha-k’-fu-FEEM

145:14   The LORD upholdeth all that fall

According to the Talmud, this psalm is the choicest of all psalms because it includes a sweeping praise of God from ‘aleph’ to ‘tav,’ as well as a reminder of the universal message that God is the sustainer of all. Indeed, the word ‘all’ referring to all peoples appears 16 times in the Psalm. Though it follows the Hebrew alphabet, the letter ‘nun’ is missing from the psalm. The sages explain that since the ‘nun’ connotes ‘nefila,’ falling, it was omitted. They quote Amos 5:2: “The virgin of Israel is fallen, she shall no more rise.” However, the Talmud quotes a source which understand the verse in the opposite way, by moving around the punctuation: “She has fallen and will no longer [fall], rise O virgin Israel.”

15  The eyes of all wait for Thee, and Thou givest them their food in due season.

16  Thou openest Thy hand, and satisfiest every living thing with favour.

19  He will fulfil the desire of them that fear Him; He also will hear their cry, and will save them.

21  My mouth shall speak the praise of Hashem; and let all flesh bless His holy name for ever and ever.
