136:23   Who remembered us in our low estate

This psalm praises God for the kindness and mercy He has shown to the Jewish people throughout history. Each line praises the Lord for an act of grace, and ends with the words “for His mercy endureth forever.” It begins with an account of different aspects of creation, mentions the exodus from Egypt and the travels in the desert, and concludes with the conquest of the lands of the eastern side of the Jordan River. Though it mentions that God gave the Jewish people the lands of Sihon and Og as an inheritance, the psalm does not contain a line that explicitly praises Him for bequeathing His people the Promised Land. Instead, it speaks of God’s ever-presence in the lives of His people, remembering them even in their “low estate” and delivering them from their enemies. According to some interpretations, this is referring to the Lord’s dedication to the Children of Israel even after they sin and are kicked out of the land. It seems that the psalmist takes for granted that the Land of Israel is God’s designate for His nation, and thus sings praises for all of the events which led to the acquiring of the land, and speaks about what happened after the acquisition of the land, but does not mention the actual bestowing of the land itself.
