Listen to this chapter in Hebrew:

1  Not unto us, O Hashem, not unto us, but unto Thy name give glory, for Thy mercy, and for Thy truth’s sake.

2  Wherefore should the nations say: ‘Where is now their God?’

3  But our God is in the heavens; whatsoever pleased Him He hath done.

4  Their idols are silver and gold, the work of men’s hands.

5  They have mouths, but they speak not; eyes have they, but they see not;

6  They have ears, but they hear not; noses have they, but they smell not;

7  They have hands, but they handle not; feet have they, but they walk not; neither speak they with their throat.

8  They that make them shall be like unto them; yea, every one that trusteth in them.

9  O Yisrael, trust thou in Hashem! He is their help and their shield!

10  O house of Aharon, trust ye in Hashem! He is their help and their shield!

11  Ye that fear Hashem, trust in Hashem! He is their help and their shield.

12  Hashem hath been mindful of us, He will bless– He will bless the house of Yisrael; He will bless the house of Aharon.

13  He will bless them that fear Hashem, both small and great.

14  Hashem increase you more and more, you and your children.

15  Blessed be ye of Hashem who made heaven and earth.

16  The heavens are the heavens of Hashem; but the earth hath He given to the children of men.

ha-sha-MA-yim sha-MA-yim la-do-NAI v’-ha-A-retz na-TAN liv-NAY a-DAM

115:16   But the earth hath He given to the children of men

Though the heavens remain under the confines of God, He bestowed the earth to man in order to spread His holy name. Rabbi Menachem Mendel of Kotzk explains beautifully: “the land was given to man to raise it up to the lofty level of the heavens.” This is especially true in the Land of Israel. The bible warns that there is a higher standard for one’s behavior in the Land of Israel, as it says in Leviticus 26-28: “Ye therefore shall keep My statutes and Mine ordinances, and shall not do any of these abominations… that the land vomit not you out also, when ye defile it, as it vomited out the nation that was before you.”

Comment

17  The dead praise not Hashem, neither any that go down into silence;

18  But we will bless Hashem from this time forth and for ever. Hallelujah.

  • 115:16 But the earth hath He given to the children of men

    We are told that the heavens remain in control of God. However he had given the Earth to be under the control of Adam and thus all mankind. To be God's Stewart and caretaker of his world. He wanted man to spread His Holy name. The people he chose to do this was through the seed of Abraham.

    We are told that Rabbi Menachem Mendel of Kotzk tells us that the land was given to man so that man could raise it back up to god by taking care of it. by producing from it, respecting and not depleting it. After all this was indeed a great and wonderful gift that God had given to us. And yes this goes double in the land of Israel for this land was chosen directly by the hand of God for his Children, No?

    The Bible teaches us that a higher standard is expected from the Children of Israel, simply because they are the chosen peoples of God. The are and will be held to a higher standard. we are told that in Leviticus 26-28, that you have to
    keep My statutes and Mine ordinances. You are told and warned not to do any abominations, as the out lying barbarians do. Such as those of the philistines and so on. You are warned that if you do such things that the nation, the earth itself, will vomit you out. even as the nation before it did. Your sin will be against the very fiber not only against God but the nation of Israel and the very Earth on which it lies.

    I can truly understand this. Being Jewish comes great responsibility. You need to know your Torah, your History. Your Roots and your Future. You can not take your heritage for granted. You need to remember that God had chosen you and your families for a very special and specific purpose in all of time and history. To Love & Serve The Lord Thy God with all your Heart & Soul and every Fibber of Your being. Amen. Carl
