1 Not unto us, O Hashem, not unto us, but unto Thy name give glory, for Thy mercy, and for Thy truth’s sake.
2 Wherefore should the nations say: ‘Where is now their God?’
3 But our God is in the heavens; whatsoever pleased Him He hath done.
4 Their idols are silver and gold, the work of men’s hands.
5 They have mouths, but they speak not; eyes have they, but they see not;
6 They have ears, but they hear not; noses have they, but they smell not;
7 They have hands, but they handle not; feet have they, but they walk not; neither speak they with their throat.
8 They that make them shall be like unto them; yea, every one that trusteth in them.
9 O Yisrael, trust thou in Hashem! He is their help and their shield!
10 O house of Aharon, trust ye in Hashem! He is their help and their shield!
11 Ye that fear Hashem, trust in Hashem! He is their help and their shield.
13 He will bless them that fear Hashem, both small and great.
14 Hashem increase you more and more, you and your children.
15 Blessed be ye of Hashem who made heaven and earth.
16 The heavens are the heavens of Hashem; but the earth hath He given to the children of men.
115:16 But the earth hath He given to the children of men
Though the heavens remain under the confines of God, He bestowed the earth to man in order to spread His holy name. Rabbi Menachem Mendel of Kotzk explains beautifully: “the land was given to man to raise it up to the lofty level of the heavens.” This is especially true in the Land of Israel. The bible warns that there is a higher standard for one’s behavior in the Land of Israel, as it says in Leviticus 26-28: “Ye therefore shall keep My statutes and Mine ordinances, and shall not do any of these abominations… that the land vomit not you out also, when ye defile it, as it vomited out the nation that was before you.”
17 The dead praise not Hashem, neither any that go down into silence;
18 But we will bless Hashem from this time forth and for ever. Hallelujah.
