Listen to this chapter in Hebrew:

1  Hallelujah. I praise Hashem with all my heart in the assembled congregation of the upright.

2  The works of Hashem are great, within reach of all who desire them.

3  His deeds are splendid and glorious; His beneficence is everlasting;

4  He has won renown for His wonders. Hashem is gracious and compassionate;

5  He gives food to those who fear Him; He is ever mindful of His covenant.

6  He revealed to His people His powerful works, in giving them the heritage of nations.

111:6   The heritage of nations

This short psalm praises God in the form of an acrostic, each half verse beginning with a different letter of the Hebrew alphabet, in succession. The praises focus on Hashem’s justice, kindness, compassion and truth. The psalm also relates to the Lord’s wondrous acts towards His nation. Verse 6 says that God declares His power to His nation by giving them Eretz Yisrael, but it does not explain what is so remarkable about this. The Sages explain: God said to the children of Israel, “I could have created a new land for you; instead I chose to defeat your enemies and let you inherit their land, so that you will see My power.” The land of Israel is a gift from Hashem. It reminds the Jewish people of God’s love for His people, His strength, and the fact that when they follow His ways, He causes their enemies to melt away from them.1 comment

7  His handiwork is truth and justice; all His precepts are enduring,

8  well-founded for all eternity, wrought of truth and equity.

9  He sent redemption to His people; He ordained His covenant for all time; His name is holy and awesome.

10  The beginning of wisdom is the fear of Hashem; all who practice it gain sound understanding. Praise of Him is everlasting.
