Listen to this chapter in Hebrew:

1  Hallelujah. I will give thanks unto Hashem with my whole heart, in the council of the upright, and in the congregation.

2  The works of Hashem are great, sought out of all them that have delight therein.

3  His work is glory and majesty; and His righteousness endureth for ever.

4  He hath made a memorial for His wonderful works; Hashem is gracious and full of compassion.

5  He hath given food unto them that fear Him; He will ever be mindful of His covenant.

6  He hath declared to His people the power of His works, in giving them the heritage of the nations.

KO-akh ma-a-SAV hi-GEED l’-a-MO la-TAYT la-HEM na-kha-LAT go-YIM

111:6   The heritage of the nations

This short psalm praises God in an acrostic, each half verse beginning with another letter of the Hebrew alphabet. The praises focus on God’s justice, kindness, compassion and truth. It also relates to the Lord’s wondrous acts towards His nation. Verse 6 speaks of a declaration of God’s power to His nation by giving them the Land of Israel. What is so remarkable about this action? The Sages state as follows: “God said to the Children of Israel, ‘I could have created a new land for you; instead I chose to defeat your enemies and let you inherit their land. All this so you shall see my power.’” The Land of Israel is a gift from God. It reminds the Jewish people of God’s love for His nation, His strength, and that when they follow His ways, He causes their enemies to melt away from them.

10  The fear of Hashem is the beginning of wisdom; a good understanding have all they that do thereafter; His praise endureth for ever.
