Listen to this chapter in Hebrew:

1  For the Leader. [A Psalm] of David. In Hashem have I taken refuge; how say ye to my soul: ‘Flee thou! to your mountain, ye birds’?

2  For, lo, the wicked bend the bow, they have made ready their arrow upon the string, that they may shoot in darkness at the upright in heart.

3  When the foundations are destroyed, what hath the righteous wrought?

4  Hashem is in His holy temple, Hashem, His throne is in heaven; His eyes behold, His eyelids try, the children of men.

5  Hashem trieth the righteous; but the wicked and him that loveth violence His soul hateth.

6  Upon the wicked He will cause to rain coals; fire and brimstone and burning wind shall be the portion of their cup.

11:6   Fire and brimstone

The words ‘aish v’gofreet,’ “fire and brimstone,” remind us of when the Lord rained down on Sodom and Gomorrah burning sulfuric coals to destroy the city, described in Genesis 19:24 as ‘gofreet va-aish’, “brimstone and fire”. In the Bible, God sends down from the heavens rain to sustain, manna to miraculously nourish, and burning fires to eradicate evil from the land. While sometimes sulfuric fire is associated with death and destruction, in the modern State of Israel it represents life, rejuvenation and prosperity. In 1911, Moshe Novomeysky, a European industrialist, visited the Dead Sea for the first time and understood its potential as a treasure trove for minerals, phosphates, sulfurs and potash. He created the Palestine Potash Company which would later turn into one of Israel’s most important export companies—Dead Sea Works.

7  For Hashem is righteous, He loveth righteousness; the upright shall behold His face.
