Listen to this chapter in Hebrew:

1  The spirit of Hashem is upon me, Because Hashem has anointed me; He has sent me as a herald of joy to the humble, To bind up the wounded of heart, To proclaim release to the captives, Liberation to the imprisoned;

2  To proclaim a year of Hashem‘s favor And a day of vindication by our God; To comfort all who mourn—

3  To provide for the mourners in Tzion— To give them a turban instead of ashes, The festive ointment instead of mourning, A garment of splendor instead of a drooping spirit. They shall be called terebinths of victory, Planted by Hashem for His glory.

4  And they shall build the ancient ruins, Raise up the desolations of old, And renew the ruined cities, The desolations of many ages.

5  Strangers shall stand and pasture your flocks, Aliens shall be your plowmen and vine-trimmers;

 61:5 Strangers shall stand and pasture your flocks

During the Messianic age, non-Jews will play an essential role in helping the Jewish people settle the Land of Israel through agriculture, as this verse states, and they will also partner with the Jews in spiritual pursuits. Rabbi Israel Lipschitz (1782-1860), in his commentary Tiferet Yisrael, quotes this verse to prove that non-Jews will participate in the actual construction of the Holy Temple, similar to the assistance King Shlomo sought from King Hiram of Tyre who sent builders and artisans to help build the first Beit Hamikdash. In modern times, this verse serves as the inspiration for the hundreds of Christian volunteers who travel each year during the harvest season to assist Jewish farmers in Israel.Comment

6  While you shall be called “Kohanim of Hashem,” And termed “Servants of our God.” You shall enjoy the wealth of nations And revel in their riches.

7  Because your shame was double— Men cried, “Disgrace is their portion”— Assuredly, They shall have a double share in their land, Joy shall be theirs for all time.

8  For I Hashem love justice, I hate robbery with a burnt offering. I will pay them their wages faithfully, And make a covenant with them for all time.

9  Their offspring shall be known among the nations, Their descendants in the midst of the peoples. All who see them shall recognize That they are a stock Hashem has blessed.

10  I greatly rejoice in Hashem, My whole being exults in my God. For He has clothed me with garments of triumph, Wrapped me in a robe of victory, Like a bridegroom adorned with a turban, Like a bride bedecked with her finery.

 61:10   I greatly rejoice in Hashem

Yeshayahu speaks in his own voice, rejoicing in Hashem’s goodness to His people. The salvation of the Jewish people, returned and dwelling safely in their own land, will be as visible as the fine jewels worn by a bridegroom and bride on their wedding day. In the meantime, while Har Habayit lies in ruin, the Jewish people observe a number of customs mourning the loss of the Beit Hamikdash. These include not wearing excessive amounts of jewelry and smashing a glass at Jewish wedding ceremonies, both as a reminder that the complete rebuilding of Yerushalayim and the Beit Hamikdash has yet to come.Comment

11  For as the earth brings forth her growth And a garden makes the seed shoot up, So Hashem will make Victory and renown shoot up In the presence of all the nations.
