Chapter 53

Translation and Transliteration of 

1“Who can believe what we have heard? Upon whom has the arm of Hashem- been revealed?

mi he-e-MEEN lish-mu-a-TE-nu u-ze-RO-a a-do-NAI al-mi nig-la-TAH

אמִ֥י הֶאֱמִ֖ין לִשְׁמֻעָתֵ֑נוּ וּזְר֥וֹעַ יְהֹוָ֖ה עַל־מִ֥י נִגְלָֽתָה׃

2For he has grown, by His favor, like a tree crown, Like a tree trunk out of arid ground. He had no form or beauty, that we should look at him: No charm, that we should find him pleasing.

vai-YA-al ka-yo-NEK l'-fa-NAV v'-ka-sho-RESH may-E-retz tzi-YAH lo-TO-ar LO v'-LO ha-DAR v'-nir-E-hu v'-LO mar-EH v'-nekh-m'-DE-hu

בוַיַּ֨עַל כַּיּוֹנֵ֜ק לְפָנָ֗יו וְכַשֹּׁ֙רֶשׁ֙ מֵאֶ֣רֶץ צִיָּ֔ה לֹא־תֹ֥אַר ל֖וֹ וְלֹ֣א הָדָ֑ר וְנִרְאֵ֥הוּ וְלֹֽא־מַרְאֶ֖ה וְנֶחְמְדֵֽהוּ׃

3He was despised, shunned by men, A man of suffering, familiar with disease. As one who hid his face from us, He was despised, we held him of no account.

niv-ZEH va-cha-DAL ee-SHEEM, eeSH makh-o-VOT vee-DU-a kho-LEE, u-k'-mas-TER pa-NEEM mi-ME-nu, niv-ZEH v'-lo kha-shav-NU-hu

גנִבְזֶה֙ וַחֲדַ֣ל אִישִׁ֔ים אִ֥ישׁ מַכְאֹב֖וֹת וִיד֣וּעַ חֹ֑לִי וּכְמַסְתֵּ֤ר פָּנִים֙ מִמֶּ֔נּוּ נִבְזֶ֖ה וְלֹ֥א חֲשַׁבְנֻֽהוּ׃

4Yet it was our sickness that he was bearing, Our suffering that he endured. We accounted him plagued, Smitten and afflicted by Hashem;

a-KHEN kho-LA-y'-NU hu NA-sa u-makh-o-VEY-nu s'-va-LAM va-a-na-KH'-nu kha-SHAV-nu-HU NA-gu-a mu-KEH e-lo-HEEM u-mu-NEH

דאָכֵ֤ן חֳלָיֵ֙נוּ֙ ה֣וּא נָשָׂ֔א וּמַכְאֹבֵ֖ינוּ סְבָלָ֑ם וַאֲנַ֣חְנוּ חֲשַׁבְנֻ֔הוּ נָג֛וּעַ מֻכֵּ֥ה אֱלֹהִ֖ים וּמְעֻנֶּֽה׃

5But he was wounded because of our sins, Crushed because of our iniquities. He bore the chastisement that made us whole, And by his bruises we were healed.

v'-HU m'-kho-LAL mi-p'-sha-E-nu, m'-du-KA me-a-vo-NOT-ei-nu, mu-SAR sh'-lo-ME-nu a-LAV, u-va-cha-vu-RA-to nir-PA-la-NU

הוְהוּא֙ מְחֹלָ֣ל מִפְּשָׁעֵ֔נוּ מְדֻכָּ֖א מֵעֲוֺנֹתֵ֑ינוּ מוּסַ֤ר שְׁלוֹמֵ֙נוּ֙ עָלָ֔יו וּבַחֲבֻרָת֖וֹ נִרְפָּא־לָֽנוּ׃

6We all went astray like sheep, Each going his own way; And Hashem visited upon him The guilt of all of us.”

KU-la-NU ka-tso-ON ta-EE-nu, EESH l'-dar-KO pa-NEE-nu, va-a-do-NAI hi-f'-GI-a BO, ET a-VON ku-la-NU.

וכֻּלָּ֙נוּ֙ כַּצֹּ֣אן תָּעִ֔ינוּ אִ֥ישׁ לְדַרְכּ֖וֹ פָּנִ֑ינוּ וַיהֹוָה֙ הִפְגִּ֣יעַ בּ֔וֹ אֵ֖ת עֲוֺ֥ן כֻּלָּֽנוּ׃

7He was maltreated, yet he was submissive, He did not open his mouth; Like a sheep being led to slaughter, Like a ewe, dumb before those who shear her, He did not open his mouth.

ni-GAS v'-HU na-a-NEH, v'-LO yif-TAKH-PIV, ka-SEH la-TE-vakh yu-BAL, u-k'-ra-KHEL lif-NEI goz-Z'-ZAY-ha ne-e-LA-MAH, v'-LO yif-TAKH-PIV.

זנִגַּ֨שׂ וְה֣וּא נַעֲנֶה֮ וְלֹ֣א יִפְתַּח־פִּיו֒ כַּשֶּׂה֙ לַטֶּ֣בַח יוּבָ֔ל וּכְרָחֵ֕ל לִפְנֵ֥י גֹזְזֶ֖יהָ נֶאֱלָ֑מָה וְלֹ֥א יִפְתַּ֖ח פִּֽיו׃

8By oppressive judgment he was taken away, Who could describe his abode? For he was cut off from the land of the living Through the sin of my people, who deserved the punishment.

me-OTZER u-mi-mish-PAT lu-KACH v'-et DO-ro mi y'-so-CHE-ach, KI nig-ZAR me-E-retz cha-YIM mi-pe-SHA a-MEE NE-ga la-MO

חמֵעֹ֤צֶר וּמִמִּשְׁפָּט֙ לֻקָּ֔ח וְאֶת־דּוֹר֖וֹ מִ֣י יְשׂוֹחֵ֑חַ כִּ֤י נִגְזַר֙ מֵאֶ֣רֶץ חַיִּ֔ים מִפֶּ֥שַׁע עַמִּ֖י נֶ֥גַע לָֽמוֹ׃

9And his grave was set among the wicked, And with the rich, in his death— Though he had done no injustice And had spoken no falsehood.

vai-YI-ten et-r'-sha-EEM ki-v'-RO v'-et-a-SHEER b'-mo-TAV al lo-KHA-mas a-SA v'-lo mir-MAH b'-pi-VU

טוַיִּתֵּ֤ן אֶת־רְשָׁעִים֙ קִבְר֔וֹ וְאֶת־עָשִׁ֖יר בְּמֹתָ֑יו עַ֚ל לֹא־חָמָ֣ס עָשָׂ֔ה וְלֹ֥א מִרְמָ֖ה בְּפִֽיו׃

10But Hashem chose to crush him by disease, That, if he made himself an offering for guilt, He might see offspring and have long life, And that through him Hashem's purpose might prosper.

va-a-do-NAI kha-FAYTS da-k'-O he-kh'-LEE, im ta-SEEM a-SHAM naf-SHO, yir-EH ze-RA ya-a-REKH ya-MEEM, v'-khe-FETS a-do-NAI b'-ya-DO yitz-LAKH

יוַיהֹוָ֞ה חָפֵ֤ץ דַּכְּאוֹ֙ הֶחֱלִ֔י אִם־תָּשִׂ֤ים אָשָׁם֙ נַפְשׁ֔וֹ יִרְאֶ֥ה זֶ֖רַע יַאֲרִ֣יךְ יָמִ֑ים וְחֵ֥פֶץ יְהֹוָ֖ה בְּיָד֥וֹ יִצְלָֽח׃

11Out of his anguish he shall see it; He shall enjoy it to the full through his devotion. “My righteous servant makes the many righteous, It is their punishment that he bears;

me-a-MAL naf-SHO yi-REH yis-BA b'-da-TO yatz-DIK tzad-DIK av-DEE la-RA-BEEM va-a-vo-NO-tam HU yis-BOL

יאמֵעֲמַ֤ל נַפְשׁוֹ֙ יִרְאֶ֣ה יִשְׂבָּ֔ע בְּדַעְתּ֗וֹ יַצְדִּ֥יק צַדִּ֛יק עַבְדִּ֖י לָֽרַבִּ֑ים וַעֲוֺנֹתָ֖ם ה֥וּא יִסְבֹּֽל׃

12Assuredly, I will give him the many as his portion, He shall receive the multitude as his spoil. For he exposed himself to death And was numbered among the sinners, Whereas he bore the guilt of the many And made intercession for sinners.”

la-KHAYN a-kha-lek LO va-ra-BEEM v'-et a-tzu-MEEM y'-kha-LAYK sha-LAL TA-khat a-SHER he-e-RAH la-MA-vet naf-SHO v'-et po-sh'-EEM nim-NAH v'-HU khayt ra-BEEM na-SA v'-la-po-sh'-EEM yaf-GEE-a

יבלָכֵ֞ן אֲחַלֶּק־ל֣וֹ בָרַבִּ֗ים וְאֶת־עֲצוּמִים֮ יְחַלֵּ֣ק שָׁלָל֒ תַּ֗חַת אֲשֶׁ֨ר הֶעֱרָ֤ה לַמָּ֙וֶת֙ נַפְשׁ֔וֹ וְאֶת־פֹּשְׁעִ֖ים נִמְנָ֑ה וְהוּא֙ חֵטְא־רַבִּ֣ים נָשָׂ֔א וְלַפֹּשְׁעִ֖ים יַפְגִּֽיעַ׃

 53:12   Assuredly, I will give him the many as his portion

Chapter 53 begins with a description of the suffering that Israel experiences. In this verse, however, Yeshayahu articulates the reward that awaits the nation. Because Israel, despite its suffering, placed the welfare of others above its own, it is promised that one day it too will be counted among the mighty, and that its portion, Eretz Yisrael, will be considered great. Today, the State of Israel is among the world’s leaders in science, technology and medicine, and stands out in the region. In 2015, for example, the U.S. Patent Office reported 3,804 patents from Israel, as compared with 364 from Saudi Arabia, 56 from the United Arab Emirates, and 30 from Egypt. Truly, Yeshayahu’s blessing is being realized and Israel’s “portion” is growing.
