Introduction to Kings

ThoughĀ SeferĀ MelachimĀ is divided into two parts, Jewish tradition considers it a single book ofĀ 47Ā chapters.Ā  As weĀ studyĀ these chapters, we experience both the highest points ofĀ theĀ historyĀ of the children ofĀ Israel,Ā and theĀ lowest.Ā  Despite the tragic ending, the high points of the book allow us to maintain hope for future.

The book begins with KingĀ ShlomoĀ ascending the throne of his father, KingĀ David,Ā as the first heir to the Davidic dynasty. Unlike his father, KingĀ ShlomoĀ rulesĀ overĀ a kingdom that is united, strong and at peace.Ā  He isĀ well-known for his wisdom andĀ for hisĀ righteousness as aĀ judge.Ā  He is also blessed with the opportunity to buildĀ theĀ BeitĀ HamikdashĀ inĀ Yerushalayim.Ā  TheĀ BeitĀ HamikdashĀ becomes the focal point ofĀ prayers and ofĀ theĀ service ofĀ Hashem,Ā for the people ofĀ IsraelĀ andĀ all those who believe in the OneĀ trueĀ God.Ā  It is an awe-inspiring structure that serves to honor and glorify the Almighty, and to bring His children closer to Him.Ā  This is one of the highest points inĀ theĀ historyĀ ofĀ IsraelĀ ā€“ theĀ peopleĀ liveĀ as a secure, prosperousĀ andĀ free nation in theĀ landĀ ofĀ Israel,Ā theyĀ are able to serveĀ HashemĀ in the most meaningful of ways, andĀ to serve asĀ a light to the other nations.

Unfortunately, theĀ peopleĀ ofĀ IsraelĀ are unable toĀ maintainĀ the heights of spiritual and political achievement attained during the times of KingĀ Shlomo.Ā  After his death, the kingdom is divided intoĀ twoĀ parts: the northern kingdom ofĀ YisraelĀ and the southernĀ kingdomĀ ofĀ Yehuda.Ā Ā AccountsĀ of the sins of the nation and its leaders dominate the second half ofĀ SeferĀ Melachim. Idol worship becomes rampant,Ā and even reaches theĀ HolyĀ Temple.

To be sure, there are important kings and righteous leaders who offer hope.Ā  For example, we learn of KingĀ Chizkiyahu, who servesĀ HashemĀ andĀ meritsĀ a miraculous rescue of the city ofĀ Yerushalayim, and ofĀ KingĀ Yoshiyahu, who, after discovering aĀ TorahĀ scroll hidden away by his predecessors, leads the people in nationwide repentance. However, such heartening eventsĀ areĀ overshadowed by the eventual destructionĀ of both kingdomsĀ and exile of their inhabitants.Ā Ā SeferĀ MelachimĀ ends with the exile of theĀ people of theĀ kingdomĀ ofĀ YehudaĀ toĀ BabyloniaĀ and the burning of theĀ BeitĀ HamikdashĀ inĀ Yerushalayim.

It would be tempting to close the book with feelings of despair.Ā  But, Jewish tradition teaches that just as theĀ BeitĀ HamikdashĀ was destroyed on the ninth day of the Hebrew month ofĀ Av,Ā theĀ Mashiach, a future king from the House ofĀ David,Ā willĀ be born on thatĀ sameĀ date.Ā  Thus, at the very depths of our grief, we find hope for the future.Ā  We know that theĀ peopleĀ ofĀ IsraelĀ will yet reach incredible heights, just as they did in the days of KingĀ Shlomo.Ā  This is hintedĀ atĀ in the story ofĀ EliyahuĀ the Prophet, who does not die but rather ascends to the next world in a fiery chariot.Ā Ā Eliyahu, who is said to be the prophet who will announce the arrival of theĀ Mashiach, is thus our link toĀ bothĀ the past and the future.

We live inĀ timesĀ of redemption.Ā  TheĀ childrenĀ ofĀ IsraelĀ have come home from the four corners of the earth toĀ EretzĀ Yisrael, and have achieved sovereignty for the first time in millennia.Ā  As in the days of KingĀ Shlomo, the righteous among the nations admire the Jewish State for its wisdom, justice and concern for all mankind.Ā Ā YerushalayimĀ is again the center of prayer toĀ Hashem.Ā  All of this, coming so soon after the Holocaust and generations of persecution, is clearly a miracle from God.

There is still a long way to go until the complete redemption.Ā  However,Ā SeferĀ MelachimĀ reminds us of the heightsĀ theĀ peopleĀ ofĀ IsraelĀ can reach, and the profound impactĀ this can have on the entire world.Ā  We pray that the State andĀ peopleĀ ofĀ IsraelĀ reach these heights, and that our generation will be blessed with complete redemption.
