1  The people that walked in darkness 1 Have seen a brilliant light; On those who dwelt in a land of gloom Light has dawned.

א  הָעָם הַהֹלְכִים בַּחֹשֶׁךְ רָאוּ אוֹר גָּדוֹל יֹשְׁבֵי בְּאֶרֶץ צַלְמָוֶת אוֹר נָגַהּ עֲלֵיהֶם׃

2  You have magnified that nation, Have given it great joy; They have rejoiced before You As they rejoice at reaping time, As they exult When dividing spoil.

ב  הִרְבִּיתָ הַגּוֹי לא [לוֹ] הִגְדַּלְתָּ הַשִּׂמְחָה שָׂמְחוּ לְפָנֶיךָ כְּשִׂמְחַת בַּקָּצִיר כַּאֲשֶׁר יָגִילוּ בְּחַלְּקָם שָׁלָל׃

3  For the yoke that they bore And the stick on their back— The rod of their taskmaster— You have broken as on the day of Midian.

ג  כִּי אֶת־עֹל סֻבֳּלוֹ וְאֵת מַטֵּה שִׁכְמוֹ שֵׁבֶט הַנֹּגֵשׂ בּוֹ הַחִתֹּתָ כְּיוֹם מִדְיָן׃

4  Truly, all the boots put on to stamp with And all the garments donned in infamy Have been fed to the flames, Devoured by fire.

ד  כִּי כָל־סְאוֹן סֹאֵן בְּרַעַשׁ וְשִׂמְלָה מְגוֹלָלָה בְדָמִים וְהָיְתָה לִשְׂרֵפָה מַאֲכֹלֶת אֵשׁ׃

5  For a child has been born to us, A son has been given us. And authority has settled on his shoulders. He has been named “The Mighty Hashem is planning grace; The Eternal Father, a peaceable ruler”—

kee YE-led yu-lad LA-nu BEN ni-tan LA-nu va-t’-HEE ha-mis-RAH al shikh-MO va-yik-RA sh’-MO PE-le yo-AYTZ AYL gi-BOR a-vee AD sar sha-LOM

ה  כִּי־יֶלֶד יֻלַּד־לָנוּ בֵּן נִתַּן־לָנוּ וַתְּהִי הַמִּשְׂרָה עַל־שִׁכְמוֹ וַיִּקְרָא שְׁמוֹ פֶּלֶא יוֹעֵץ אֵל גִּבּוֹר אֲבִיעַד שַׂר־שָׁלוֹם׃

6  In token of abundant authority And of peace without limit Upon David‘s throne and kingdom, That it may be firmly established In justice and in equity Now and evermore. The zeal of the lord of Hosts Shall bring this to pass.

ו  לםרבה [לְמַרְבֵּה] הַמִּשְׂרָה וּלְשָׁלוֹם אֵין־קֵץ עַל־כִּסֵּא דָוִד וְעַל־מַמְלַכְתּוֹ לְהָכִין אֹתָהּ וּלְסַעֲדָהּ בְּמִשְׁפָּט וּבִצְדָקָה מֵעַתָּה וְעַד־עוֹלָם קִנְאַת יְהֹוָה צְבָאוֹת תַּעֲשֶׂה־זֹּאת׃

7  My Lord Let loose a word against Yaakov And it fell upon Yisrael.

ז  דָּבָר שָׁלַח אֲדֹנָי בְּיַעֲקֹב וְנָפַל בְּיִשְׂרָאֵל׃

8  But all the people noted— Efraim and the inhabitants of Shomron— In arrogance and haughtiness:

ח  וְיָדְעוּ הָעָם כֻּלּוֹ אֶפְרַיִם וְיוֹשֵׁב שֹׁמְרוֹן בְּגַאֲוָה וּבְגֹדֶל לֵבָב לֵאמֹר׃

9  “Bricks have fallen— We’ll rebuild with dressed stone; Sycamores have been felled— We’ll grow cedars instead!”

ט  לְבֵנִים נָפָלוּ וְגָזִית נִבְנֶה שִׁקְמִים גֻּדָּעוּ וַאֲרָזִים נַחֲלִיף׃

10  So Hashem let the enemies of Rezin Triumph over it And stirred up its foes—

י  וַיְשַׂגֵּב יְהֹוָה אֶת־צָרֵי רְצִין עָלָיו וְאֶת־אֹיְבָיו יְסַכְסֵךְ׃

11  Aram from the east And Philistia from the west— Who devoured Yisrael With greedy mouths. Yet His anger has not turned back, And His arm is outstretched still.

יא  אֲרָם מִקֶּדֶם וּפְלִשְׁתִּים מֵאָחוֹר וַיֹּאכְלוּ אֶת־יִשְׂרָאֵל בְּכָל־פֶּה בְּכָל־זֹאת לֹא־שָׁב אַפּוֹ וְעוֹד יָדוֹ נְטוּיָה׃

12  For the people has not turned back To Him who struck it And has not sought the lord of Hosts.

יב  וְהָעָם לֹא־שָׁב עַד־הַמַּכֵּהוּ וְאֶת־יְהֹוָה צְבָאוֹת לֹא דָרָשׁוּ׃

13  So Hashem will cut off from Yisrael Head and tail, Palm branch and reed, In a single day.

יג  וַיַּכְרֵת יְהֹוָה מִיִּשְׂרָאֵל רֹאשׁ וְזָנָב כִּפָּה וְאַגְמוֹן יוֹם אֶחָד׃

14  Elders and magnates— Such are the heads; Neviim who give false instruction, Such are the tails

יד  זָקֵן וּנְשׂוּא־פָנִים הוּא הָרֹאשׁ וְנָבִיא מוֹרֶה־שֶּׁקֶר הוּא הַזָּנָב׃

15  That people’s leaders have been misleaders, So they that are led have been confused.

טו  וַיִּהְיוּ מְאַשְּׁרֵי הָעָם־הַזֶּה מַתְעִים וּמְאֻשָּׁרָיו מְבֻלָּעִים׃

16  That is why my Lord Will not spare their youths, Nor show compassion To their orphans and widows; For all are ungodly and wicked, And every mouth speaks impiety.

טז  עַל־כֵּן עַל־בַּחוּרָיו לֹא־יִשְׂמַח אֲדֹנָי וְאֶת־יְתֹמָיו וְאֶת־אַלְמְנֹתָיו לֹא יְרַחֵם כִּי כֻלּוֹ חָנֵף וּמֵרַע וְכָל־פֶּה דֹּבֵר נְבָלָה בְּכָל־זֹאת לֹא־שָׁב אַפּוֹ וְעוֹד יָדוֹ נְטוּיָה׃

17  Already wickedness has blazed forth like a fire Devouring thorn and thistle. It has kindled the thickets of the wood, Which have turned into billowing smoke. Yet His anger has not turned back, And His arm is outstretched still.*

יז  כִּי־בָעֲרָה כָאֵשׁ רִשְׁעָה שָׁמִיר וָשַׁיִת תֹּאכֵל וַתִּצַּת בְּסִבְכֵי הַיַּעַר וַיִּתְאַבְּכוּ גֵּאוּת עָשָׁן׃

18  By the fury of the lord of Hosts, The earth was shaken. Next, the people became like devouring fire: No man spared his countryman.

יח  בְּעֶבְרַת יְהֹוָה צְבָאוֹת נֶעְתַּם אָרֶץ וַיְהִי הָעָם כְּמַאֲכֹלֶת אֵשׁ אִישׁ אֶל־אָחִיו לֹא יַחְמֹלוּ׃

19  They snatched on the right, but remained hungry, And consumed on the left without being sated. Each devoured the flesh of his own kindred—

יט  וַיִּגְזֹר עַל־יָמִין וְרָעֵב וַיֹּאכַל עַל־שְׂמֹאול וְלֹא שָׂבֵעוּ אִישׁ בְּשַׂר־זְרֹעוֹ יֹאכֵלוּ׃

20  Menashe Efraim‘s, and Efraim Menashe‘s, And both of them against Yehuda! Yet His anger has not turned back, And His arm is outstretched still.

כ  מְנַשֶּׁה אֶת־אֶפְרַיִם וְאֶפְרַיִם אֶת־מְנַשֶּׁה יַחְדָּו הֵמָּה עַל־יְהוּדָה בְּכָל־זֹאת לֹא־שָׁב אַפּוֹ וְעוֹד יָדוֹ נְטוּיָה׃

    Um no he was referring to Jesus. It should have been said in the article.

    Jeremiah 23: 5 Behold, the days come, saith Hashem, that I will raise unto David a righteous shoot, and he shall reign as king and prosper, and shall execute justice and righteousness in the land.
    6 In his days Yehudah shall be saved, and Yisrael shall dwell safely; and this is his name whereby he shall be called, Hashem is our righteousness.
    Please compare with Isaiah 9:5 For a child is born unto us, a son is given unto us; and the government is upon his shoulder; and his name is called Pele-joez-el-gibbor-Abi-ad-sar-shalom;66 That the government may be increased, and of peace there be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to establish it, and to uphold it through justice and through righteousness from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of Hashem of hosts doth perform this.

    Why is it that the names given are not translated into English in The Israel Bible?
