3  [Say this:] “All you who live in the world And inhabit the earth, When a flag is raised in the hills, take note! When a shofar is blown, give heed!”

18:3   When a flag is raised in the hills, take note

The word nays (נס) in this verse means ‘flag’ or ‘banner,’ but the same word also means ‘miracle.’ Just as a banner serves as a reminder to onlookers, a miracle is also meant to remind “all inhabitants of the world” that Hashem directs all events from behind the scenes.

  • This gives us extreme confidence in Hashem. Because He works behind the scenes we are not always aware that He is indeed working on our behalf, but work He does. I'm reminded of the people who weave the wonderful patterns in rugs and carpets and have heard that they do all the work from the back, and then look to see the pattern/picture. What trust we can have in our God, that he sees the front first and then orders our lives, if we submit to him, to make the pattern sweet.
