1  The word of Hashem came to me:

2  O mortal, set your face against Mount Seir and prophesy against it.

3  Say to it: Thus said Hashem: I am going to deal with you, Mount Seir: I will stretch out My hand against you and make you an utter waste.

4  I will turn your towns into ruins, and you shall be a desolation; then you shall know that I am Hashem.

5  Because you harbored an ancient hatred and handed the people of Yisrael over to the sword in their time of calamity, the time set for their punishment—

YA-an he-YOT l’-KHA ay-VAT o-LAM va-ta-GAYR et b’-nay yis-ra-AYL al y’-DAY KHA-rev b’-AYT ay-DAM b’-AYT a-VON KAYTZ

35:5  Because you harbored an ancient hatred

Although chapter 32 ended Yechezkel’s prophecies against the nations, he returns with one final chapter against the nation of Edom. The Edomites were descendants of Esau whose animosity towards his brother Yaakov was perpetuated throughout history. Esau inhabited the mountainous region on the east side of the Arava valley, around Mount Seir — a dry, barren, rocky landscape. Yechezkel explains that since the Edomites constantly assisted Israel’s enemies, God was personally against them (verse 3), and would ensure that their country would remain desolate (verse 4).1 comment

6  assuredly, as I live, declares Hashem, I will doom you with blood; blood shall pursue you; I swear that, for your bloodthirsty hatred, blood shall pursue you.

7  I will make Mount Seir an utter waste, and I will keep all passersby away from it.

8  I will cover its mountains with the slain; men slain by the sword shall lie on your hills, in your valleys, and in all your watercourses.

9  I will make you a desolation for all time; your towns shall never be inhabited. And you shall know that I am Hashem.

10  Because you thought “The two nations and the two lands shall be mine and we shall possess them”—although Hashem was there—

11  assuredly, as I live, declares Hashem, I will act with the same anger and passion that you acted with in your hatred of them. And I will make Myself known through them when I judge you.

12  You shall know that I Hashem have heard all the taunts you uttered against the hills of Yisrael: “They have been laid waste; they have been given to us as prey.”

13  And you spoke arrogantly against Me and multiplied your words against Me: I have heard it.

14  Thus said Hashem: When the whole earth rejoices, I will make you a desolation.

15  As you rejoiced when the heritage of the House of Yisrael was laid waste, so will I treat you: the hill country of Seir and the whole of Edom, all of it, shall be laid waste. And they shall know that I am Hashem.
