Chapter 40

Translation and Transliteration of

1In the twenty-fifth year of our exile, the fourteenth year after the city had fallen, at the beginning of the year, the tenth day of the month—on that very day—the hand of Hashem came upon me, and He brought me there.

 40:2  And He set me down on a very high mountain

The final section of Yechezkel’s prophecy describes the building of the third Beit Hamikdash, its operation, and the re-division of the Land of Israel among the people. These chapters contain the prophet’s hopes for his people, and represent the closing of a circle that began in chapter 1. Decades earlier, Yechezkel envisioned the Divine Presence leaving Eretz Yisrael and the Temple prior to its destruction. Now, perched on the high mountain, the Temple Mount in Yerushalayim, Yechezkel can foresee the return of the People of Israel to the Land of Israel, and God’s Presence returning to His city. According to the sages, this vision comes to Yechezkel at the beginning of the yovel, the Jubilee year. Radak emphasizes how appropriate the timing of this vision is, since during the yovel, all people are freed and returned to their ancestral homes.

3He brought me over to it, and there, standing at the gate, was a man who shone like copper. In his hand were a cord of linen and a measuring rod.

39And inside the vestibule of the gate, there were two tables on each side, at which the burnt offering, the sin offering, and the guilt offering were to be slaughtered;

40while outside—as one goes up toward the opening of the north gate—there were two tables on one side, and there were two tables on the other side of the gate's vestibule.
