Chapter 31

Translation and Transliteration of

1In the eleventh year, on the first day of the third month, the word of Hashem came to me:

vai-HI b'-a-KHAT es-ray sha-NAH ba-sh'-li-SHI b'-e-KHAD la-KHO-desh, ha-YAH d'-var a-do-NAI e-LAI lay-MOR

2O mortal, say to Pharaoh king of Egypt and his hordes: Who was comparable to you in greatness?

3Assyria was a cedar in Lebanon With beautiful branches and shady thickets, Of lofty stature, With its top among leafy trees.

31:3  Assyria was a cedar in Lebanon

For people who refused to believe that Egypt could be defeated after centuries of hegemony, Yechezkel points to Assyria. The mighty Assyrians had ruled for centuries, secure in their dominant position as a world power, like a solid and strong cedar tree. Yet they were ultimately chopped down and quickly fell. The cedar trees from Lebanon are remarkably thick and tall trees, reaching up to ninety feet in height and having a girth of over thirty feet. Because of its quality and resistance to decay and worms, cedar wood was a highly valued construction material. Indeed, King Shlomo imported cedars from Lebanon to use in the construction of his own palace, as well the Beit Hamikdash.

4Waters nourished it, The deep made it grow tall, Washing with its streams The place where it was planted, Making its channels well up To all the trees of the field.
