Chapter 35

Translation and Transliteration of

1The word of Hashem came to me:

vai-HI d'-var a-do-NAI e-LAI lay-MOR

אוַיְהִ֥י דְבַר־יְהֹוָ֖ה אֵלַ֥י לֵאמֹֽר׃

2O mortal, set your face against Mount Seir and prophesy against it.

בבֶּן־אָדָ֕ם שִׂ֥ים פָּנֶ֖יךָ עַל־הַ֣ר שֵׂעִ֑יר וְהִנָּבֵ֖א עָלָֽיו׃

3Say to it: Thus said Hashem: I am going to deal with you, Mount Seir: I will stretch out My hand against you and make you an utter waste.

4I will turn your towns into ruins, and you shall be a desolation; then you shall know that I am Hashem.

5Because you harbored an ancient hatred and handed the people of Yisrael over to the sword in their time of calamity, the time set for their punishment—

35:5  Because you harbored an ancient hatred

Although chapter 32 ended Yechezkel’s prophecies against the nations, he returns with one final chapter against the nation of Edom. The Edomites were descendants of Esau whose animosity towards his brother Yaakov was perpetuated throughout history. Esau inhabited the mountainous region on the east side of the Arava valley, around Mount Seir — a dry, barren, rocky landscape. Yechezkel explains that since the Edomites constantly assisted Israel’s enemies, God was personally against them (verse 3), and would ensure that their country would remain desolate (verse 4).

6assuredly, as I live, declares Hashem, I will doom you with blood; blood shall pursue you; I swear that, for your bloodthirsty hatred, blood shall pursue you.
