1In the eleventh year, on the first of the month, the word of Hashem came to me:

26:2  Because Tyre gloated over Yerushalayim

Tyre, the capital city of the Phoenician empire, was besieged by Nebuchadnezzar and ultimately destroyed by Alexander the Great. Tyre was a great commercial center, with a rock fortress located offshore that was nearly impregnable. Its ability to withstand great armies made Tyre’s inhabitants arrogant and insensitive. They rejoice at the misfortune of their neighbors, trying to profit from the sufferings of others. Since their attitude towards Yerushalayim is described as “I shall be filled, now that it is laid in ruins,” Tyre is deserving of the divine punishments that will befall it.

3assuredly, thus said Hashem: I am going to deal with you, O Tyre! I will hurl many nations against you, As the sea hurls its waves.
