Listen to this chapter in Hebrew:

1  You shall make the mizbayach of acacia wood, five amot long and five amot wide—the mizbayach is to be square—and three amot high.

2  Make its horns on the four corners, the horns to be of one piece with it; and overlay it with copper.

3  Make the pails for removing its ashes, as well as its scrapers, basins, flesh hooks, and fire pans—make all its utensils of copper.

4  Make for it a grating of meshwork in copper; and on the mesh make four copper rings at its four corners.

5  Set the mesh below, under the ledge of the mizbayach, so that it extends to the middle of the mizbayach.

6  And make poles for the mizbayach, poles of acacia wood, and overlay them with copper.

7  The poles shall be inserted into the rings, so that the poles remain on the two sides of the mizbayach when it is carried.

8  Make it hollow, of boards. As you were shown on the mountain, so shall they be made.

n’-VUV lu-KHOT ta-a-SEH o-TO ka-a-SHER her-AH o-t’-KHA ba-HAR KAYN ya-a-SU

 27:8   Hollow, of boards

The altar is constructed from hollow boards that are filled with earth whenever the Israelites camp and reassemble the Mishkan in the desert. Only once the nation reaches Eretz Yisrael is a permanent, solid altar of stone constructed. These hollow planks reflect the transitory life of the Israelites in the desert. Only once they reach the Land of Israel can they finally settle into their permanent home. This is a timeless message to Jews in exile: Life outside of Israel should be seen as temporary, and homes and businesses should be built accordingly. The Land of Israel is the only truly permanent home for the People of Israel.1 comment
