1  And Hashem spoke unto Moshe, saying:

א  וַיְדַבֵּר יְהוָה אֶל מֹשֶׁה לֵּאמֹר.

2  Speak unto B’nei Yisrael, and say unto them: When either man or woman shall clearly utter a vow, the vow of a Nazirite, to consecrate himself unto Hashem,

ב  דַּבֵּר אֶל בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל וְאָמַרְתָּ אֲלֵהֶם אִישׁ אוֹ אִשָּׁה כִּי יַפְלִא לִנְדֹּר נֶדֶר נָזִיר לְהַזִּיר לַיהוָה.

3  he shall abstain from wine and strong drink: he shall drink no vinegar of wine, or vinegar of strong drink, neither shall he drink any liquor of grapes, nor eat fresh grapes or dried.

ג  מִיַּיִן וְשֵׁכָר יַזִּיר חֹמֶץ יַיִן וְחֹמֶץ שֵׁכָר לֹא יִשְׁתֶּה וְכָל מִשְׁרַת עֲנָבִים לֹא יִשְׁתֶּה וַעֲנָבִים לַחִים וִיבֵשִׁים לֹא יֹאכֵל.

4  All the days of his Naziriteship shall he eat nothing that is made of the grape-vine, from the pressed grapes even to the grapestone.

ד  כֹּל יְמֵי נִזְרוֹ מִכֹּל אֲשֶׁר יֵעָשֶׂה מִגֶּפֶן הַיַּיִן מֵחַרְצַנִּים וְעַד זָג לֹא יֹאכֵל.

5  All the days of his vow of Naziriteship there shall no razor come upon his head; until the days be fulfilled, in which he consecrateth himself unto Hashem, he shall be holy, he shall let the locks of the hair of his head grow long.

ה  כָּל יְמֵי נֶדֶר נִזְרוֹ תַּעַר לֹא יַעֲבֹר עַל רֹאשׁוֹ עַד מְלֹאת הַיָּמִם אֲשֶׁר יַזִּיר לַיהוָה קָדֹשׁ יִהְיֶה גַּדֵּל פֶּרַע שְׂעַר רֹאשׁוֹ.

6  All the days that he consecrateth himself unto Hashem he shall not come near to a dead body.

ו  כָּל יְמֵי הַזִּירוֹ לַיהוָה עַל נֶפֶשׁ מֵת לֹא יָבֹא.

7  He shall not make himself unclean for his father, or for his mother, for his brother, or for his sister, when they die; because his consecration unto God is upon his head.

ז  לְאָבִיו וּלְאִמּוֹ לְאָחִיו וּלְאַחֹתוֹ לֹא יִטַּמָּא לָהֶם בְּמֹתָם כִּי נֵזֶר אֱלֹהָיו עַל רֹאשׁוֹ.

8  All the days of his Naziriteship he is holy unto Hashem.

ח  כֹּל יְמֵי נִזְרוֹ קָדֹשׁ הוּא לַיהוָה.

9  And if any man die very suddenly beside him, and he defile his consecrated head, then he shall shave his head in the day of his cleansing, on the seventh day shall he shave it.

ט  וְכִי יָמוּת מֵת עָלָיו בְּפֶתַע פִּתְאֹם וְטִמֵּא רֹאשׁ נִזְרוֹ וְגִלַּח רֹאשׁוֹ בְּיוֹם טָהֳרָתוֹ בַּיּוֹם הַשְּׁבִיעִי יְגַלְּחֶנּוּ.

10  And on the eighth day he shall bring two turtledoves, or two young pigeons, to the Kohen, to the door of the Tent of Meeting.

י  וּבַיּוֹם הַשְּׁמִינִי יָבִא שְׁתֵּי תֹרִים אוֹ שְׁנֵי בְּנֵי יוֹנָה אֶל הַכֹּהֵן אֶל פֶּתַח אֹהֶל מוֹעֵד.

11  And the Kohen shall prepare one for a sin-offering, and the other for a burnt-offering, and make atonement for him, for that he sinned by reason of the dead; and he shall hallow his head that same day.

יא  וְעָשָׂה הַכֹּהֵן אֶחָד לְחַטָּאת וְאֶחָד לְעֹלָה וְכִפֶּר עָלָיו מֵאֲשֶׁר חָטָא עַל הַנָּפֶשׁ וְקִדַּשׁ אֶת רֹאשׁוֹ בַּיּוֹם הַהוּא.

12  And he shall consecrate unto Hashem the days of his Naziriteship, and shall bring a he-lamb of the first year for a guilt-offering; but the former days shall be void, because his consecration was defiled.

יב  וְהִזִּיר לַיהוָה אֶת יְמֵי נִזְרוֹ וְהֵבִיא כֶּבֶשׂ בֶּן שְׁנָתוֹ לְאָשָׁם וְהַיָּמִים הָרִאשֹׁנִים יִפְּלוּ כִּי טָמֵא נִזְרוֹ.

13  And this is the law of the Nazirite, when the days of his consecration are fulfilled: he shall bring it unto the door of the Tent of Meeting;

יג  וְזֹאת תּוֹרַת הַנָּזִיר בְּיוֹם מְלֹאת יְמֵי נִזְרוֹ יָבִיא אֹתוֹ אֶל פֶּתַח אֹהֶל מוֹעֵד.

14  and he shall present his offering unto Hashem, one he-lamb of the first year without blemish for a burnt-offering, and one ewe-lamb of the first year without blemish for a sin-offering, and one ram without blemish for peace-offerings,

v’-hik-REEV et kor-ba-NO la-a-do-NAI KE-ves ben sh’-na-TO ta-MEEM e-KHAD l’-o-LAH v’-khav-SAH a-KHAT bat sh’-na-TAH t’-mee-MAH l’-kha-TAT v’-a-YIL e-KHAD ta-MEEM lish-la-MEEM

יד  וְהִקְרִיב אֶת קָרְבָּנוֹ לַיהוָה כֶּבֶשׂ בֶּן שְׁנָתוֹ תָמִים אֶחָד לְעֹלָה וְכַבְשָׂה אַחַת בַּת שְׁנָתָהּ תְּמִימָה לְחַטָּאת וְאַיִל אֶחָד תָּמִים לִשְׁלָמִים.

6:14   For a sin-offering

The Nazirite is someone who takes it upon himself to abstain from wine, cutting his hair and becoming contaminated by a dead body, for the purpose of coming closer to God and elevating himself spiritually. In essence, a Nazirite is removing himself from the ills of society so that he can remain pure and holy. At first glance, this seems admirable, something to be lauded and emulated. Indeed, the verse refers to the Nazirite as holy to God (verse 8). However, at the completion of his period of abstinence, the Nazirite is required to bring a sin-offering. What is the sin of the Nazir? While it is important to set aside time to work on oneself and his personal growth, the ideal is not to remove oneself from society completely. Rather, we must try to elevate ourselves within society and bring the rest of the world up with us. It is very easy to look at the problems in the world, and especially in the Land of Israel, and say that I want to have nothing to do with them.  But our true goal is to identify the problems, confront them, and do what we can to make the world in general, and the Land of Israel in particular, a better place.

15  and a basket of unleavened bread, cakes of fine flour mingled with oil, and unleavened wafers spread with oil, and their meal-offering, and their drink-offerings.

טו  וְסַל מַצּוֹת סֹלֶת חַלֹּת בְּלוּלֹת בַּשֶּׁמֶן וּרְקִיקֵי מַצּוֹת מְשֻׁחִים בַּשָּׁמֶן וּמִנְחָתָם וְנִסְכֵּיהֶם.

16  And the Kohen shall bring them before Hashem, and shall offer his sin-offering, and his burnt-offering.

טז  וְהִקְרִיב הַכֹּהֵן לִפְנֵי יְהוָה וְעָשָׂה אֶת חַטָּאתוֹ וְאֶת עֹלָתוֹ.

17  And he shall offer the ram for a sacrifice of peace-offerings unto Hashem, with the basket of unleavened bread; the Kohen shall offer also the meal-offering thereof, and the drink-offering thereof.

יז  וְאֶת הָאַיִל יַעֲשֶׂה זֶבַח שְׁלָמִים לַיהוָה עַל סַל הַמַּצּוֹת וְעָשָׂה הַכֹּהֵן אֶת מִנְחָתוֹ וְאֶת נִסְכּוֹ.

18  And the Nazirite shall shave his consecrated head at the door of the Tent of Meeting, and shall take the hair of his consecrated head, and put it on the fire which is under the sacrifice of peace-offerings.

יח  וְגִלַּח הַנָּזִיר פֶּתַח אֹהֶל מוֹעֵד אֶת רֹאשׁ נִזְרוֹ וְלָקַח אֶת שְׂעַר רֹאשׁ נִזְרוֹ וְנָתַן עַל הָאֵשׁ אֲשֶׁר תַּחַת זֶבַח הַשְּׁלָמִים.

19  And the Kohen shall take the shoulder of the ram when it is sodden, and one unleavened cake out of the basket, and one unleavened wafer, and shall put them upon the hands of the Nazirite, after he hath shaven his consecrated head.

יט  וְלָקַח הַכֹּהֵן אֶת הַזְּרֹעַ בְּשֵׁלָה מִן הָאַיִל וְחַלַּת מַצָּה אַחַת מִן הַסַּל וּרְקִיק מַצָּה אֶחָד וְנָתַן עַל כַּפֵּי הַנָּזִיר אַחַר הִתְגַּלְּחוֹ אֶת נִזְרוֹ.

20  And the Kohen shall wave them for a wave-offering before Hashem; this is holy for the Kohen, together with the breast of waving and the thigh of heaving; and after that the Nazirite may drink wine.

כ  וְהֵנִיף אוֹתָם הַכֹּהֵן תְּנוּפָה לִפְנֵי יְהוָה קֹדֶשׁ הוּא לַכֹּהֵן עַל חֲזֵה הַתְּנוּפָה וְעַל שׁוֹק הַתְּרוּמָה וְאַחַר יִשְׁתֶּה הַנָּזִיר יָיִן.

21  This is the law of the Nazirite who voweth, and of his offering unto Hashem for his Naziriteship, beside that for which his means suffice; according to his vow which he voweth, so he must do after the law of his Naziriteship.

כא  זֹאת תּוֹרַת הַנָּזִיר אֲשֶׁר יִדֹּר קָרְבָּנוֹ לַיהוָה עַל נִזְרוֹ מִלְּבַד אֲשֶׁר תַּשִּׂיג יָדוֹ כְּפִי נִדְרוֹ אֲשֶׁר יִדֹּר כֵּן יַעֲשֶׂה עַל תּוֹרַת נִזְרוֹ.

22  And Hashem spoke unto Moshe, saying:

כב  וַיְדַבֵּר יְהוָה אֶל מֹשֶׁה לֵּאמֹר.

23  ‘Speak unto Aharon and unto his sons, saying: On this wise ye shall bless B’nei Yisrael; ye shall say unto them:

da-BAYR el ah-ha-RON v’-EL ba-NAV lay-MOR ko t’-va-r’-KHU et b’-NAY yis-ra-AYL a-MOR la-HEM

כג  דַּבֵּר אֶל אַהֲרֹן וְאֶל בָּנָיו לֵאמֹר כֹּה תְבָרְכוּ אֶת בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל אָמוֹר לָהֶם.

24  Hashem bless thee, and keep thee;

y’-va-rekh-KHA a-do-NAI v’-yish-m’-RE-kha

כד  יְבָרֶכְךָ יְהוָה וְיִשְׁמְרֶךָ.

25  Hashem make His face to shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee;

ya-AYR a-do-NAI pa-NAV ay-LE-kha vee-khu-NE-ka

כה  יָאֵר יְהוָה פָּנָיו אֵלֶיךָ וִיחֻנֶּךָּ.

26  Hashem lift up His countenance upon thee, and give thee peace.

yi-SA a-do-NAI pa-NAV ay-LE-kha v’-ya-SAYM l’-KHA sha-LOM

כו  יִשָּׂא יְהוָה פָּנָיו אֵלֶיךָ וְיָשֵׂם לְךָ שָׁלוֹם.

6:26  And lift up His countenance upon thee, and give thee peace.

The blessing of the Kohanim contains three parts.  It begins with a blessing for prosperity and safety, continues with a blessing for God’s grace, and then climaxes with a blessing of peace.  Indeed, the Sages taught that “God found no vessel to contain His blessings, other than peace.”  We pray every day for the total fulfillment of the Priestly Blessing when we will live peacefully in the Land of Israel.

כז  וְשָׂמוּ אֶת שְׁמִי עַל בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל וַאֲנִי אֲבָרְכֵם.
