1 And the heads of the fathers’ houses of the family of the children of Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of Menashe, of the families of the sons of Yosef, came near, and spoke before Moshe, and before the princes, the heads of the fathers’ houses of B’nei Yisrael;
2 and they said: ‘Hashem commanded my lord to give the land for inheritance by lot to B’nei Yisrael; and my lord was commanded by Hashem to give the inheritance of Tzelofkhad our brother unto his daughters.

3 And if they be married to any of the sons of the other tribes of B’nei Yisrael, then will their inheritance be taken away from the inheritance of our fathers, and will be added to the inheritance of the tribe whereunto they shall belong; so will it be taken away from the lot of our inheritance.

36:3 – Then will their inheritance be taken away from the inheritance of our fathers
Out of a deep sense of passion for the Land of Israel, Zelophehad’s daughters pleaded with Moses for the right to inherit their father’s land in the absence of sons, and their request was granted. Now the elders of the tribe of Menasseh, who share the same love of the Land, approach Moses with the following concern: The Land of Israel is to be divided for eternal inheritance among the tribes through divine lottery. If Zelophehad’s daughters marry men of other tribes, their land will permanently transfer from the tribe of Menasseh to the tribes of their husbands, as the land will ultimately be inherited by their husbands and sons. To lose out on a piece of the Land of Israel is distressing to the tribal leaders who approach Moses with their dilemna. In order to resolve the issue, the daughters of Zelophehad marry men of their own the tribe, and Menasseh is thus able to hold on to every inch of the precious land in its possesion. The book of Numbers tells of many provocations of God by the Children of Israel in the desert. Most unsettling was the sin of the spies, the rejection of the Promised Land that led to 40 years of wandering in the desert and the death of a generation. The book of Numbers ends, however, with an inspiring story of love for the Land of Israel.Comment
4 And when the jubilee of B’nei Yisrael shall be, then will their inheritance be added unto the inheritance of the tribe whereunto they shall belong; so will their inheritance be taken away from the inheritance of the tribe of our fathers.’

6 This is the thing which Hashem hath commanded concerning the daughters of Tzelofkhad, saying: Let them be married to whom they think best; only into the family of the tribe of their father shall they be married.

8 And every daughter, that possesseth an inheritance in any tribe of B’nei Yisrael, shall be wife unto one of the family of the tribe of her father, that B’nei Yisrael may possess every man the inheritance of his fathers.
9 So shall no inheritance remove from one tribe to another tribe; for the tribes of B’nei Yisrael shall cleave each one to its own inheritance.’

10 Even as Hashem commanded Moshe, so did the daughters of Tzelofkhad.

11 For Mahlah, Tirzah, and Hoglah, and Milcah, and Noah, the daughters of Tzelofkhad, were married unto their father’s brothers’ sons.
