33:19   The parcel of land where he pitched his tent

View of the landscape of Shechem

After escaping unscathed from Esau’s clutches, Yaakov enters Canaan and purchases the land he has chosen to settle. This is a message for all of eternity. To ensure survival amidst countless enemies, the Children of Israel must build up their only true safe haven, the Land of Israel. Like his grandfather Avraham, Yaakov then builds an altar to Hashem. Rav Ovadya Seforno, a sixteenth century Italian commentator, points out that after spending time in exile, Yaakov appreciates that service of Hashem is most fitting in Eretz Yisrael, and he immediately makes every possible effort to worship the one true God of Israel there.

  • Phyllis makes a fantastic point. Chpt 33. To bow seven times was custom before a King and Esau really was the King of Edom( Seir). I find it interesting also that 7 represents spiritual completeness, Jacob truly has become Israel!! 33:18 No times are given by ages, Jacob(Israel) probably stayed in Shechem 8-10 years. Shalem= Sholom, translated; Israel came in peace to Shechem, there is no record of a " place" called Shalem. 33:20 The alter is named "God of Israel" not God of Jacob, further evidence that Jacob has become the " new man" complete with God. Amen to that!!!

  • It's almost like Jacob was saying, "This far and no further, I'm staking my claim" little was he to know the amazing plans Hashem had for him and all Israel. It also gave him the right to set his boundaries and to defend the land,
