3  Then Hashem said to Yaakov, “Return to the land of your fathers where you were born, and I will be with you.”

31:3   Return to the land of your fathers

Malbim (1809-1879)

With these words, Hashem implies that He will be with Yaakov only if he returns to the land of his fathers, the Land of Israel, but not if he stays with Lavan in Haran. Rabbi Meir Leibush Weiser, a Bible commentator and Hebrew grammarian commonly known by the acronym Malbim, explains that Hashem intentionally removed His protection from Yaakov in order to motivate him to return to Eretz Yisrael. After spending so much time outside the Holy Land, it is time for Yaakov to go home.

  • You know we often overlook the 'small' words in scripture – here is the word in verse 3 – 'and', and the Rabbi is quite correct I believe; using this little word indicates that Hashem will be with Jacob 'if/when' he returns to Israel, to the land, given by covenant by Hashem with Jacobs fathers. Therein is the promise that Hashem will be with those who return/go to Israel. There is a time to recognize these small words, they link meanings and provide context.

    • I agree! I also realize like Michael said that there are seasons in our lives, and Yahweh sustains us all through these seasons. In all seasons, the best is when we return to the land, in that we are most assured of Yahweh's protection; part of returning to the land is returning to the Torah.

  • Wow! This is a HUGE concept, and lines up beautifully with Ecclesiastes…as in “a time for every purpose under heaven”.

I have seen, after the fact, the purposes of God in my life and the “reasons for the seasons” !!!!! I am so grateful for the season that I am now entering, a season of spring in my soul. Its been, spiritually speaking, a BRUTAL winter for me for about 10 years. I feel as though I have been released from prison and out into the fresh air!!! Now I know why we Jews have big noses… smell all the flowers!!!
    P.S. L’ Chaim !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Michael – I think we all go through 'winters' as you call the time, I thought my time was like being in a desert. Hashem is gracious and gave me encouragement through verses in Psalm 82. In my desert Hashem provided places where I found refreshment. This site has been part of Hashem's answer to me. I am so grateful, he will be with us always, sometimes we don't always see him, but He is there nevertheless.

  • I see this as another opportunity for Jacob’s faith and trust to grow. He knew he would have to confront Esau and the sins of his past as he went back to the land of Israel, his home. As we grow in our faith, we are also given the same opportunity…to look back upon our lives, hand it over to G-d in faith, and walk with Him into our future.

  • Sometimes when we journey in our life, and ask God, Where am I and What direction as I heading ? IN HIs mysterious ways I Believe God is guiding us back to our home ………….. Prayers, Shalom,……… thank you for this opportunity too……. ie It seems humanity is in this same journey today…………….
