Listen to this chapter in Hebrew:

1  You shall make a mizbayach for burning incense; make it of acacia wood.

2  It shall be an amah long and an amah wide—it shall be square—and two amot high, its horns of one piece with it.

3  Overlay it with pure gold: its top, its sides round about, and its horns; and make a gold molding for it round about.

4  And make two gold rings for it under its molding; make them on its two side walls, on opposite sides. They shall serve as holders for poles with which to carry it.

5  Make the poles of acacia wood, and overlay them with gold.

6  Place it in front of the curtain that is over the Aron HaBrit—in front of the cover that is over the Pact—where I will meet with you.

7  On it Aharon shall burn aromatic incense: he shall burn it every morning when he tends the lamps,

8  and Aharon shall burn it at twilight when he lights the lamps—a regular incense offering before Hashem throughout the ages.

9  You shall not offer alien incense on it, or a burnt offering or a meal offering; neither shall you pour a libation on it.

10  Once a year Aharon shall perform purification upon its horns with blood of the sin offering of purification; purification shall be performed upon it once a year throughout the ages. It is most holy to Hashem.

11  Hashem spoke to Moshe, saying:

12  When you take a census of B’nei Yisrael according to their enrollment, each shall pay Hashem a ransom for himself on being enrolled, that no plague may come upon them through their being enrolled.

30:12   When you take a census of the B’nei Yisrael

Moshe is commanded to count the Nation of Israel. However, he is not to count individuals. Instead, each person being counted is to make a donation of half a shekel to the Mishkan, and the half shekel coins are to then be counted. Rabbi Samson Raphael Hirsch explains the symbolism of this method: Merely existing among others does not make one an integral part of a society. In order to be counted as part of the nation, each member has to give of themselves and contribute to the community.2 comments

13  This is what everyone who is entered in the records shall pay: a half-shekel by the sanctuary weight—twenty giera to the shekel —a half- shekel as an offering to Hashem.

14  Everyone who is entered in the records, from the age of twenty years up, shall give Hashem‘s offering:

15  the rich shall not pay more and the poor shall not pay less than half a shekel when giving Hashem‘s offering as expiation for your persons.

16  You shall take the expiation money from the Israelites and assign it to the service of the Tent of Meeting; it shall serve the Israelites as a reminder before Hashem, as expiation for your persons.

17  Hashem spoke to Moshe, saying:

18  Make a laver of copper and a stand of copper for it, for washing; and place it between the Tent of Meeting and the mizbayach. Put water in it,

19  and let Aharon and his sons wash their hands and feet [in water drawn] from it.

20  When they enter the Tent of Meeting they shall wash with water, that they may not die; or when they approach the mizbayach to serve, to turn into smoke an offering by fire to Hashem,

21  they shall wash their hands and feet, that they may not die. It shall be a law for all time for them—for him and his offspring—throughout the ages.

22  Hashem spoke to Moshe, saying:

23  Next take choice spices: five hundred weight of solidified myrrh, half as much—two hundred and fifty—of fragrant cinnamon, two hundred and fifty of aromatic cane,

24  five hundred—by the sanctuary weight—of cassia, and a hin of olive oil.

25  Make of this a sacred anointing oil, a compound of ingredients expertly blended, to serve as sacred anointing oil.

26  With it anoint the Tent of Meeting, the Aron HaBrit,

27  the table and all its utensils, the menorah and all its fittings, the mizbayach of incense,

28  the mizbayach of burnt offering and all its utensils, and the laver and its stand.

29  Thus you shall consecrate them so that they may be most holy; whatever touches them shall be consecrated.

30  You shall also anoint Aharon and his sons, consecrating them to serve Me as Kohanim.

31  And speak to B’nei Yisrael, as follows: This shall be an anointing oil sacred to Me throughout the ages.

32  It must not be rubbed on any person’s body, and you must not make anything like it in the same proportions; it is sacred, to be held sacred by you.

33  Whoever compounds its like, or puts any of it on a layman, shall be cut off from his kin.

34  And Hashem said to Moshe: Take the herbs stacte, onycha, and galbanum—these herbs together with pure frankincense; let there be an equal part of each.

35  Make them into incense, a compound expertly blended, refined, pure, sacred.

36  Beat some of it into powder, and put some before the Pact in the Tent of Meeting, where I will meet with you; it shall be most holy to you.

37  But when you make this incense, you must not make any in the same proportions for yourselves; it shall be held by you sacred to Hashem.

38  Whoever makes any like it, to smell of it, shall be cut off from his kin.

    Psalm 91
1 He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.
2 I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust.
3 Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence.
4 He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler.
    5 Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day;
6 Nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness; nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday.
7 A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee.
8 Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold and see the reward of the wicked.
    9 Because thou hast made the LORD, which is my refuge, even the most High, thy habitation;
10 There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling.
11 For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways.
12 They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone.
13 Thou shalt tread upon the lion and adder: the young lion and the dragon shalt thou trample under feet.
14 Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him: I will set him on high, because he hath known my name.
15 He shall call upon me, and I will answer him: I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and honour him.
16 With long life will I satisfy him, and shew him my salvation.
