1  Tzidkiyahu was one and twenty years old when he began to reign; and he reigned eleven years in Yerushalayim; and his mother’s name was Hamutal the daughter of Yirmiyahu of Libnah.

2  And he did that which was evil in the sight of Hashem, according to all that Yehoyakim had done.

3  For through the anger of Hashem did it come to pass in Yerushalayim and Yehudah, until He had cast them out from His presence. And Tzidkiyahu rebelled against the king of Bavel.

52:3   Indeed, Yerushalayim and Yehuda were a cause of anger for Hashem

Yirmiyahu’s final chapter repeats the description of the downfall of Yehuda and Yerushalayim at the hands of the Babylonians. One might be tempted to separate Hashem from history, and state that politics and theology do not mix. What Yirmiyahu teaches is that the two work hand-in-hand. On the surface, Babylonia is another superpower overrunning a minor, vassal state. However, Yehuda is vulnerable not because of its small army, but because it refuses to perform justice and righteousness, and worships idols in Hashem‘s holy land. It is their sinful behavior and God’s corresponding anger that leads to Israel’s exile, just as God’s everlasting love for His people and His land will eventually lead to their full return and restoration, and to the redemption of the entire world.1 comment

4  And it came to pass in the ninth year of his reign, in the tenth month, in the tenth day of the month, that Nevuchadretzar king of Bavel came, he and all his army, against Yerushalayim, and encamped against it; and they built forts against it round about.

5  So the city was besieged unto the eleventh year of king Tzidkiyahu.

6  In the fourth month, in the ninth day of the month, the famine was sore in the city, so that there was no bread for the people of the land.

7  Then a breach was made in the city, and all the men of war fled, and went forth out of the city by night by the way of the gate between the two walls, which was by the king’s garden–now the Chaldeans were against the city round about–and they went by the way of the Arabah.

8  But the army of the Chaldeans pursued after the king, and overtook Tzidkiyahu in the plains of Jericho; and all his army was scattered from him.

9  Then they took the king, and carried him up unto the king of Bavel to Riblah in the land of Hamath; and he gave judgment upon him.

10  And the king of Bavel slew the sons of Tzidkiyahu before his eyes; he slew also all the princes of Yehudah in Riblah.

11  And he put out the eyes of Tzidkiyahu; and the king of Bavel bound him in fetters, and carried him to Bavel, and put him in prison till the day of his death.

12  Now in the fifth month, in the tenth day of the month, which was the nineteenth year of king Nevuchadretzar, king of Bavel, came Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard, who stood before the king of Bavel, into Yerushalayim;

13  and he burned the house of Hashem, and the king’s house; and all the houses of Yerushalayim, even every great man’s house, burned he with fire.

14  And all the army of the Chaldeans, that were with the captain of the guard, broke down all the walls of Yerushalayim round about.

15  Then Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard carried away captive of the poorest sort of the people, and the residue of the people that remained in the city, and those that fell away, that fell to the king of Bavel, and the residue of the multitude.

16  But Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard left of the poorest of the land to be vinedressers and husbandmen.

17  And the pillars of brass that were in the house of Hashem, and the bases and the brazen sea that were in the house of Hashem, did the Chaldeans break in pieces, and carried all the brass of them to Bavel.

18  The pots also, and the shovels, and the snuffers, and the basins, and the pans, and all the vessels of brass wherewith they ministered, took they away.

19  And the cups, and the fire-pans, and the basins, and the pots, and the candlesticks, and the pans, and the bowls–that which was of gold, in gold, and that which was of silver, in silver–the captain of the guard took away.

20  The two pillars, the one sea, and the twelve brazen bulls that were under the bases, which king Shlomo had made for the house of Hashem–the brass of all these vessels was without weight.

21  And as for the pillars, the height of the one pillar was eighteen cubits; and a line of twelve cubits did compass it; and the thickness thereof was four fingers; it was hollow.

22  And a capital of brass was upon it; and the height of the one capital was five cubits, with network and pomegranates upon the capital round about, all of brass; and the second pillar also had like unto these, and pomegranates.

23  And there were ninety and six pomegranates on the outside; all the pomegranates were a hundred upon the network round about.

24  And the captain of the guard took Seraiah the chief Kohen, and Zephaniah the second Kohen, and the three keepers of the door;

25  and out of the city he took an officer that was set over the men of war; and seven men of them that saw the king’s face, who were found in the city; and the scribe of the captain of the host, who mustered the people of the land; and threescore men of the people of the land, that were found in the midst of the city.

26  And Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard took them, and brought them to the king of Bavel to Riblah.

27  And the king of Bavel smote them, and put them to death at Riblah in the land of Hamath. So Yehudah was carried away captive out of his land.

28  This is the people whom Nevuchadretzar carried away captive: in the seventh year three thousand Jews and three and twenty;

29  in the eighteenth year of Nevuchadretzar, from Yerushalayim, eight hundred thirty and two persons;

30  in the three and twentieth year of Nevuchadretzar Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard carried away captive of the Jews seven hundred forty and five persons; all the persons were four thousand and six hundred.

31  And it came to pass in the seven and thirtieth year of the captivity of Yehoyachin king of Yehudah, in the twelfth month, in the five and twentieth day of the month, that Evil-merodach king of Bavel, in the first year of his reign, lifted up the head of Yehoyachin king of Yehudah, and brought him forth out of prison.

32  And he spoke kindly to him, and set his throne above the throne of the kings that were with him in Bavel.

33  And he changed his prison garments, and did eat bread before him continually all the days of his life.

34  And for his allowance, there was a continual allowance given him of the king of Bavel, every day a portion until the day of his death, all the days of his life.
