1Concerning the Amonites. Thus said Hashem: Has Yisrael no sons, Has he no heir? Then why has Milcom dispossessed Gad, And why have his people settled in Gad's towns?

49:1   Has Yisrael no sons

After the deportation of the ten tribes of Israel to Assyria by Tiglat-pileser, Ammon occupies some of the lands that have been vacated. Yirmiyahu criticizes the Ammonites for taking Israeli land. The Ammonites assume that the tribes of Israel have disappeared, never to return. However, this reflects a misunderstanding of the eternal bond between the People of Israel and their inherited land. Even if the exiles themselves do not return, eventually their children will. Therefore, Yirmiyahu asks Ammon if Israel has no sons — do they not understand that the ancestral link between the People of Israel and the Land of Israel spans all generations?

2Assuredly, days are coming —declares Hashem— When I will sound the alarm of war Against Rabbah of the Amonites; It shall become a desolate mound, And its villages shall be set on fire. And Yisrael shall dispossess Those who dispossessed him —said Hashem.
