Listen to this chapter in Hebrew:

1  Concerning Moab. Thus said God of Hosts, the God of Yisrael: Alas, that Nebo should be ravaged, Kiriathaim captured and shamed, The stronghold shamed and dismayed!

a-SHER ha-YAH d’-VAR a-do-NAI el yir-m’-YA-hu ha-na-VEE el p’-lish-TEEM b’-TE-rem ya-KEH far-OH et a-ZAH

47:1  Concerning the Philistines

Yirmiyahu now prophesies about the destruction of the Philistines. The Philistines lived on the southwestern coast of Israel, and occupied the five cities of AzzaAshkelonAshdodEkron, and Gat. In the Bible, they continuously appear as an enemy of the Israelites. While Yirmiyahu depicts their destruction, he does not provide a reason for the harsh decree against them. Yechezkel (25:15), however, provides a possible insight into why they deserve this punishment: “because the Philistines, in their ancient hatred, acted vengefully, and with utter scorn sought revenge and destruction.”Comment

2  Moab’s glory is no more; In Heshbon they have planned evil against her: “Come, let us make an end of her as a nation!” You too, O Madmen, shall be silenced; The sword is following you.

3  Hark! an outcry from Horonaim, Destruction and utter ruin!

4  Moab is broken; Her young ones cry aloud;

5  They climb to Luhith Weeping continually; On the descent to Horonaim A distressing cry of anguish is heard:

6  Flee, save your lives! And be like Aroer in the desert.

7  Surely, because of your trust In your wealth and in your treasures, You too shall be captured. And Chemosh shall go forth to exile, Together with his kohanim and attendants.
