47:1 Concerning the Philistines
Jeremiah now prophesies about the destruction of the Philistines. The Philistines lived on the southern-western coast of Israel and occupied the five cities of Gaza, Ashkelon, Ashdod, Ekron, and Gath. In the Bible, they continuously appear as an enemy of the Israelites. While Jeremiah depicts their destruction, he does not provide a reason for the harsh decree against them. Ezekiel 25:15, however, provides a possible insight into why they deserve this punishment: “because the Philistines have dealt by revenge, and have taken vengeance with disdain of soul to destroy, for the old hatred.”
2 Thus saith Hashem: behold, waters rise up out of the north, and shall become an overflowing stream, and they shall overflow the land and all that is therein, the city and them that dwell therein; and the men shall cry, and all the inhabitants of the land shall wail.
3 At the noise of the stamping of the hoofs of his strong ones, at the rushing of his chariots, at the rumbling of his wheels, the fathers look not back to their children for feebleness of hands;

6 O thou sword of Hashem, how long will it be ere thou be quiet? Put up thyself into thy scabbard, rest, and be still.
