Listen to this chapter in Hebrew:

1  When Yirmiyahu had finished speaking all these words to all the people—all the words of Hashem their God, with which Hashem their God had sent him to them—

2  Azarya son of Hoshaiah and Yochanan son of Kareah and all the arrogant men said to Yirmiyahu, “You are lying! Hashem our God did not send you to say, ‘Don’t go to Egypt and sojourn there’!

42:2   For we remain but a few out of many

The people, in panic over the upcoming invasion from Babylonia, turn to the prophet and ask him to pray for guidance. Yirmiyahu counsels them against going down to Egypt. However, in their final act of disobedience against God, they flee to Egypt, forcefully taking Yirmiyahu with them. Their statement that they were once many, but now have become few, represents an undoing of the divine promises. Sefer Devarim (10:22) describes how God took a ‘few’ people, made them ‘many’, and brought them from Egypt to the land of Israel. Now they leave Eretz Yisrael headed for Egypt, few instead of many; a painful reminder of the damage caused by refusing to listen to the Word of God.Comment

3  It is Baruch son of Nerya who is inciting you against us, so that we will be delivered into the hands of the Chaldeans to be killed or to be exiled to Babylon!”

4  So Yochanan son of Kareah and all the army officers and the rest of the people did not obey Hashem’s command to remain in the land of Yehuda.

5  Instead, Yochanan son of Kareah and all the army officers took the entire remnant of Yehuda—those who had returned from all the countries to which they had been scattered and had sojourned in the land of Yehuda,

6  men, women, and children; and the daughters of the king and all the people whom Nebuzaradan the chief of the guards had left with Gedalia son of Achikam son of Shafan, as well as the navi Yirmiyahu and Baruch son of Nerya

7  and they went to Egypt. They did not obey Hashem. They arrived at Tahpanhes,

8  and the word of Hashem came to Yirmiyahu in Tahpanhes:

9  Get yourself large stones, and embed them in mortar in the brick structure at the entrance to Pharaoh’s palace in Tahpanhes, with some Judeans looking on.

10  And say to them: “Thus said God of Hosts, the God of Yisrael: I am sending for My servant King Nebuchadrezzar of Babylon, and I will set his throne over these stones which I have embedded. He will spread out his pavilion over them.

11  He will come and attack the land of Egypt, delivering Those destined for the plague, to the plague, Those destined for captivity, to captivity, And those destined for the sword, to the sword.

12  And I will set fire to the temples of the gods of Egypt; he will burn them down and carry them off. He shall wrap himself up in the land of Egypt, as a shepherd wraps himself up in his garment. And he shall depart from there in safety.

13  He shall smash the obelisks of the Temple of the Sun which is in the land of Egypt, and he shall burn down the temples of the gods of Egypt.

14  saying: No; but we will go into the land of Mitzrayim, where we shall see no war, nor hear the sound of the horn, nor have hunger of bread; and there will we abide;

15  now therefore hear ye the word of Hashem, O remnant of Yehudah: Thus saith Hashem of hosts, the God of Yisrael: If ye wholly set your faces to enter into Mitzrayim, and go to sojourn there;

16  then it shall come to pass, that the sword, which ye fear, shall overtake you there in the land of Mitzrayim, and the famine, whereof ye are afraid, shall follow hard after you there in Mitzrayim; and there ye shall die.

17  So shall it be with all the men that set their faces to go into Mitzrayim to sojourn there; they shall die by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence; and none of them shall remain or escape from the evil that I will bring upon them.

18  For thus saith Hashem of hosts, the God of Yisrael: As Mine anger and My fury hath been poured forth upon the inhabitants of Yerushalayim, so shall My fury be poured forth upon you, when ye shall enter into Mitzrayim; and ye shall be an execration, and an astonishment, and a curse, and a reproach; and ye shall see this place no more.

19  Hashem hath spoken concerning you, O remnant of Yehudah: Go ye not into Mitzrayim; know certainly that I have forewarned you this day.

20  For ye have dealt deceitfully against your own souls; for ye sent me unto Hashem your God, saying: Pray for us unto Hashem our God; and according unto all that Hashem our God shall say, so declare unto us, and we will do it;

21  and I have this day declared it to you; but ye have not hearkened to the voice of Hashem your God in any thing for which He hath sent me unto you.

22  Now therefore know certainly that ye shall die by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence, in the place whither ye desire to go to sojourn there.’
