Listen to this chapter in Hebrew:

1  The word which came to Yirmiyahu from Hashem in the days of King Yehoyakim son of Yoshiyahu of Yehuda:

2  Go to the house of the Rechabites and speak to them, and bring them to the House of Hashem, to one of the Hambers, and give them wine to drink.

ha-LOKH el BAYT ha-ray-kha-VEEM v’-di-bar-TA o-TAM va-ha-vi-o-TAM BAYT a-do-NAI el a-KHAT ha-l’-sha-KHOT v’-hish-kee-TA o-TAM YA-yin

3  So I took Jaazaniah son of Yirmiyahu son of Habazziniah, and his brothers, all his sons, and the whole household of the Rechabites;

4  and I brought them to the House of Hashem, to the Hamber of the sons of Hanan son of Igdaliah, the man of Hashem, which is next to the Hamber of the officials and above the Hamber of Maaseiah son of Shalum, the guardian of the threshold.

5  I set bowls full of wine and cups before the men of the house of the Rechabites, and said to them, “Have some wine.”

6  They replied, “We will not drink wine, for our ancestor, Yonadav son of Rechab, commanded us: ‘You shall never drink wine, either you or your children.

7  Nor shall you build houses or sow fields or plant vineyards, nor shall you own such things; but you shall live in tents all your days, so that you may live long upon the land where you sojourn.’

8  And we have obeyed our ancestor Yonadav son of Rechab in all that he commanded us: we never drink wine, neither we nor our wives nor our sons and daughters.

9  Nor do we build houses to live in, and we do not own vineyards or fields for sowing;

10  but we live in tents. We have obeyed and done all that our ancestor Yonadav commanded us.

11  But when King Nebuchadrezzar of Babylon invaded the country, we said, ‘Come, let us go into Yerushalayim because of the army of the Chaldeans and the army of Aram.’ And so we are living in Yerushalayim.”

12  Then the word of Hashem came to Yirmiyahu:

13  Thus said God of Hosts, the God of Yisrael: Go say to the men of Yehuda and the inhabitants of Yerushalayim: “You can learn a lesson [here] about obeying My commands—declares Hashem.

14  The commands of Yonadav son of Rechab have been fulfilled: he charged his children not to drink wine, and to this day they have not drunk, in obedience to the charge of their ancestor. But I spoke to you persistently, and you did not listen to Me.

15  I persistently sent you all My servants, the neviim, to say: ‘Turn back, every one of you, from your wicked ways and mend your deeds; do not follow other gods or serve them. Then you may remain on the land that I gave to you and your fathers.’ But you did not give ear or listen to Me.

16  The family of Yonadav son of Rechab have indeed fulfilled the charge which their ancestor gave them; but this people has not listened to Me.

17  Assuredly, thus said Hashem, the God of Hosts, the God of Yisrael: I am going to bring upon Yehuda and upon all the inhabitants of Yerushalayim all the disaster with which I have threatened them; for I spoke to them, but they would not listen; I called to them, but they would not respond.”

34:17   You would not obey Me and proclaim a release

With the Babylonian onslaught, the nobility and landowners made a covenant with the people to release all the slaves and workers from their servitude. Once the threat receded temporarily, they reneged on their promise and re-enslaved the poor workers. God declares this injustice intolerable. He freed the Jewish people from Egyptian servitude so that they would dwell as a free nation in the land of Israel, living up to the highest standards of ethics and morality. However, should they begin to enslave others or engage in other unscrupulous or deceptive behavior, Hashem will give the nations of the world the freedom to strike, and they will once again become slaves to foreigners.Comment

18  And to the family of the Rechabites Yirmiyahu said: “Thus said God of Hosts, the God of Yisrael: Because you have obeyed the charge of your ancestor Yonadav and kept all his commandments, and done all that he enjoined upon you,

19  assuredly, thus said God of Hosts, the God of Yisrael: There shall never cease to be a man of the line of Yonadav son of Rechab standing before Me.”

20  I will even give them into the hand of their enemies, and into the hand of them that seek their life; and their dead bodies shall be for food unto the fowls of the heaven, and to the beasts of the earth.

21  And Tzidkiyahu king of Yehudah and his princes will I give into the hand of their enemies, and into the hand of them that seek their life, and into the hand of the king of Bavels army, that are gone up from you.

22  Behold, I will command, saith Hashem, and cause them to return to this city; and they shall fight against it, and take it, and burn it with fire; and I will make the cities of Yehudah a desolation, without inhabitant.
