30:12   When you take a census of the B’nei Yisrael

Moshe is commanded to count the Nation of Israel. However, he is not to count individuals. Instead, each person being counted is to make a donation of half a shekel to the Mishkan, and the half shekel coins are to then be counted. Rabbi Samson Raphael Hirsch explains the symbolism of this method: Merely existing among others does not make one an integral part of a society. In order to be counted as part of the nation, each member has to give of themselves and contribute to the community.

  • Interesting that poor and rich were to give the same amount, does this mean that although not equal in the worldly sense they are equal before Hashem? Perhaps one can take that further in that Hashem requires the same from us all, regardless of our standing in the community. Also that the Law is for all men of all stations in life, now that really does make community doesn't it. Hashem makes no distinction between us, we are all his children.

  • In all of Exodus the two chapters today have ment so much to me. Think about it, RANSOM silver no more no less. What was this silver used for as a memorial? Ah ha, the foundation of the Tabernacle, the support of the gold plated wood that made up the Holy Place and the Most Holy Place. Think on this.
