1  You are children of Hashem your God. You shall not gash yourselves or shave the front of your heads because of the dead.

14:1   You are children of Hashem your God

These words explain why the Nation of Israel is sometimes held to a higher standard. Since they are the children of Hashem, they cannot express their mourning by hurting themselves and they may eat only certain foods, as the chapter goes on to describe. This is not meant to imply that they are the only children of Hashem, but rather that their special status reflects the fact that they were chosen by God to be His ambassadors and to set an example for the rest of His creations. As such, Hashem chose the Land of Israel as the place from which the Israelites are to serve as “a light unto the nations.”

  • The “special status” children of HaShem are the ones who follow Him and are obedient to His ways; these are the ones who will dwell in His presence, singing hymns to His name forever (Psalms 61:8-9).
