23  Moshe and Aharon then went inside the Tent of Meeting. When they came out, they blessed the people; and the Presence of Hashem appeared to all the people.

Model of the Mishkan in Timna Park

The purpose of the Mishkan in the desert, and the Beit Hamikdash in Yerushalayim, is to serve as a fixed resting place for Hashem’s presence on earth. The commandment to build the Mishkan directly follows the revelation at Sinai, since, according to Ramban, the Mishkan constitutes the continuation of the revelation at Sinai. While the Divine Presence rested briefly on Mount Sinai, it found a long-term home in the Mishkan, and ultimately a permanent dwelling on the Temple Mount in Yerushalayim.

  • When I consider the Presence of the Pillar of Fire/Cloud by Day in the midst of the camp and then the Glory of the Divine Presence in the Mishkan AND the water that poured from the Rock, I struggle to understand how the people could fall so easily into sin at every opportunity that presents itself to them.
It breaks my heart to think that I’m just like them and I can just as easily be turned aside from the “narrow path”. While we have much more opportunity to study and learn from the Torah, what makes us different or better in any way. We’ve strayed so far from the teachings of Moshe that we struggle to get back to the Truth in every Torah portion.
It’s my heart’s cry for You, Elohim to change our hearts and write YOUR Torah on our hearts. Keep us close to You in every way and teach us how to walk uprightly before You. If YOU turn away from us, we will fall. Let us cling to YOU and seek YOU with all of our hearts.
    Baruch Hashem.
