Chapter 3

1If his offering is a sacrifice of well-being—If he offers of the herd, whether a male or a female, he shall bring before Hashem one without blemish.

 3:1   If his offering is a sacrifice of well-being

Old City of Jerusalem, “city of peace”

The sacrifice of well-being is often called the ‘peace-offering’ based on its Hebrew name, korban sh’lamim (קרבן שלמים), which comes from the Hebrew word shalom (שלום), ‘peace.’ According to Jewish tradition, it is so called because the korban sh’lamim symbolizes peace and unity, as it is the only offering that is shared by everyone involved: Hashem (referring to the portions consumed on the altar), the priest and the owner of the sacrifice. It is perhaps not a coincidence that it is also the only offering that is not restricted to the Beit Hamikdash, but may be eaten anywhere in the city of Yerushalayim. Yerushalayim, the Hebrew name for Jerusalem, also has the word shalom at its root. It is known as the eer shel shalom (עיר של שלום), ‘city of peace.’ We pray for the time when peace and unity, symbolized by the korban sh’lamim, will return to Jerusalem, and to all of Israel.

2He shall lay his hand upon the head of his offering and slaughter it at the entrance of the Tent of Meeting; and Aharon's sons, the Kohanim, shall dash the blood against all sides of the mizbayach.

3He shall then present from the sacrifice of well-being, as an offering by fire to Hashem, the fat that covers the entrails and all the fat that is about the entrails;

4the two kidneys and the fat that is on them, that is at the loins; and the protuberance on the liver, which he shall remove with the kidneys.

5Aharon's sons shall turn these into smoke on the mizbayach, with the burnt offering which is upon the wood that is on the fire, as an offering by fire, of pleasing odor to Hashem.

6And if his offering for a sacrifice of well-being to Hashem is from the flock, whether a male or a female, he shall offer one without blemish.

7If he presents a sheep as his offering, he shall bring it before Hashem

8and lay his hand upon the head of his offering. It shall be slaughtered before the Tent of Meeting, and Aharon's sons shall dash its blood against all sides of the mizbayach.

9He shall then present, as an offering by fire to Hashem, the fat from the sacrifice of well-being: the whole broad tail, which shall be removed close to the backbone; the fat that covers the entrails and all the fat that is about the entrails;

10the two kidneys and the fat that is on them, that is at the loins; and the protuberance on the liver, which he shall remove with the kidneys.

11The Kohen shall turn these into smoke on the mizbayach as food, an offering by fire to Hashem.

12And if his offering is a goat, he shall bring it before Hashem

13and lay his hand upon its head. It shall be slaughtered before the Tent of Meeting, and Aharon's sons shall dash its blood against all sides of the mizbayach.

14He shall then present as his offering from it, as an offering by fire to Hashem, the fat that covers the entrails and all the fat that is about the entrails;

15the two kidneys and the fat that is on them, that is at the loins; and the protuberance on the liver, which he shall remove with the kidneys.

16The Kohen shall turn these into smoke on the mizbayach as food, an offering by fire, of pleasing odor. All fat is Hashem's.

17It is a law for all time throughout the ages, in all your settlements: you must not eat any fat or any blood.
