Chapter 11

Translation and Transliteration of 

1Hashem spoke to Moshe and Aharon, saying to them:

va-y'-da-BAYR a-do-NAI el mo-SHEH v'-el a-ha-RON lay-MOR a-lay-HEM

אוַיְדַבֵּ֧ר יְהֹוָ֛ה אֶל־מֹשֶׁ֥ה וְאֶֽל־אַהֲרֹ֖ן לֵאמֹ֥ר אֲלֵהֶֽם׃

2Speak to B'nei Yisrael thus: These are the creatures that you may eat from among all the land animals:

da-B'-RU el b'-NAY yis-ra-AYL lay-MOR: zo-TA ha-KHA-yah a-SHER to-KH'-LU mi-KOL ha-b'-HE-mah a-SHER al ha-A-retz

בדַּבְּר֛וּ אֶל־בְּנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל לֵאמֹ֑ר זֹ֤את הַֽחַיָּה֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר תֹּאכְל֔וּ מִכׇּל־הַבְּהֵמָ֖ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר עַל־הָאָֽרֶץ׃

3any animal that has true hoofs, with clefts through the hoofs, and that chews the cud—such you may eat.

KOL maf-RE-set par-SAH v'-sho-SA-at she-SA p'-ra-SOT ma-a-LAT ge-RAH ba-be-HE-mah o-TAH to-KHE-lu

גכֹּ֣ל ׀ מַפְרֶ֣סֶת פַּרְסָ֗ה וְשֹׁסַ֤עַת שֶׁ֙סַע֙ פְּרָסֹ֔ת מַעֲלַ֥ת גֵּרָ֖ה בַּבְּהֵמָ֑ה אֹתָ֖הּ תֹּאכֵֽלוּ׃

4The following, however, of those that either chew the cud or have true hoofs, you shall not eat: the camel—although it chews the cud, it has no true hoofs: it is unclean for you;

vai-YO-mer-U ha-VA ni-v'-NEH LA-nu EER u-mig-DAL v'-RO-sho va-sha-MA-yim v'-na-a-SEH LA-nu SHEM pen-NA-futz al p'-NAY kol ha-A-retz

דאַ֤ךְ אֶת־זֶה֙ לֹ֣א תֹֽאכְל֔וּ מִֽמַּעֲלֵי֙ הַגֵּרָ֔ה וּמִמַּפְרִסֵ֖י הַפַּרְסָ֑ה אֶֽת־הַ֠גָּמָ֠ל כִּֽי־מַעֲלֵ֨ה גֵרָ֜ה ה֗וּא וּפַרְסָה֙ אֵינֶ֣נּוּ מַפְרִ֔יס טָמֵ֥א ה֖וּא לָכֶֽם׃

5the daman—although it chews the cud, it has no true hoofs: it is unclean for you;

va-YAY-red a-do-NAI lir-OT et-ha-IR v'-et-ha-mig-DAL a-SHER ba-NU b'-NAY ha-a-DAM

הוְאֶת־הַשָּׁפָ֗ן כִּֽי־מַעֲלֵ֤ה גֵרָה֙ ה֔וּא וּפַרְסָ֖ה לֹ֣א יַפְרִ֑יס טָמֵ֥א ה֖וּא לָכֶֽם׃

6the hare—although it chews the cud, it has no true hoofs: it is unclean for you;

va-YO-mer a-do-NAI, HAYN am e-KHAD v'-sa-FAH a-KHAT l'-khu-LAM v'-ZEH ha-KHI-lam la-a-SOT, v'-a-TAH lo yi-BA-tser me-HEM kol a-SHER ya-Z'-MU la-a-SOT.

ווְאֶת־הָאַרְנֶ֗בֶת כִּֽי־מַעֲלַ֤ת גֵּרָה֙ הִ֔וא וּפַרְסָ֖ה לֹ֣א הִפְרִ֑יסָה טְמֵאָ֥ה הִ֖וא לָכֶֽם׃

7and the swine—although it has true hoofs, with the hoofs cleft through, it does not chew the cud: it is unclean for you.

ha-VAH ne-RE-da v'-na-VE-la SHAM s'-fa-TAM a-SHER lo yish-m'-U eesh s'-FAT ray-E-hu

זוְאֶת־הַ֠חֲזִ֠יר כִּֽי־מַפְרִ֨יס פַּרְסָ֜ה ה֗וּא וְשֹׁסַ֥ע שֶׁ֙סַע֙ פַּרְסָ֔ה וְה֖וּא גֵּרָ֣ה לֹֽא־יִגָּ֑ר טָמֵ֥א ה֖וּא לָכֶֽם׃

8You shall not eat of their flesh or touch their carcasses; they are unclean for you.

va-YA-fetz a-do-NAI o-TAM mi-SHAM al p'-NAY kol ha-A-retz va-ya-kh'-DU l'-v'-NOT ha-IR

חמִבְּשָׂרָם֙ לֹ֣א תֹאכֵ֔לוּ וּבְנִבְלָתָ֖ם לֹ֣א תִגָּ֑עוּ טְמֵאִ֥ים הֵ֖ם לָכֶֽם׃

9These you may eat of all that live in water: anything in water, whether in the seas or in the streams, that has fins and scales—these you may eat.

al-KEN ka-RA sh'-MAH ba-VEL, KEE-SHAM ba-LAL a-do-NAI s'-FAT kol-ha-A-retz, u-mi-SHAM he-fi-TZAM a-do-NAI al-p'-NAY kol-ha-A-retz. (Selah)

טאֶת־זֶה֙ תֹּֽאכְל֔וּ מִכֹּ֖ל אֲשֶׁ֣ר בַּמָּ֑יִם כֹּ֣ל אֲשֶׁר־לוֹ֩ סְנַפִּ֨יר וְקַשְׂקֶ֜שֶׂת בַּמַּ֗יִם בַּיַּמִּ֛ים וּבַנְּחָלִ֖ים אֹתָ֥ם תֹּאכֵֽלוּ׃

10But anything in the seas or in the streams that has no fins and scales, among all the swarming things of the water and among all the other living creatures that are in the water—they are an abomination for you

AY-leh to-LE-doth SHEM, SHEM ben-m'-AT sha-NAH, vai-YO-led et-ar-pakh-SHAD, sh'-na-TA-yim a-KHAR ha-ma-BUL

יוְכֹל֩ אֲשֶׁ֨ר אֵֽין־ל֜וֹ סְנַפִּ֣יר וְקַשְׂקֶ֗שֶׂת בַּיַּמִּים֙ וּבַנְּחָלִ֔ים מִכֹּל֙ שֶׁ֣רֶץ הַמַּ֔יִם וּמִכֹּ֛ל נֶ֥פֶשׁ הַחַיָּ֖ה אֲשֶׁ֣ר בַּמָּ֑יִם שֶׁ֥קֶץ הֵ֖ם לָכֶֽם׃

11and an abomination for you they shall remain: you shall not eat of their flesh and you shall abominate their carcasses.

vai-KHEE-SHEM a-kha-RAY ho-LEE-do et ar-pakh-SHAD, kha-MAYSH may-OT sha-NAH, va-YO-led ba-NEEM u-va-NOHT.

יאוְשֶׁ֖קֶץ יִהְי֣וּ לָכֶ֑ם מִבְּשָׂרָם֙ לֹ֣א תֹאכֵ֔לוּ וְאֶת־נִבְלָתָ֖ם תְּשַׁקֵּֽצוּ׃

12Everything in water that has no fins and scales shall be an abomination for you.

KOL a-SHER AYN-lo se-NA-feer v'-kas-KE-set ba-MA-yim, SHE-ketz HU la-KHEM.

יבכֹּ֣ל אֲשֶׁ֥ר אֵֽין־ל֛וֹ סְנַפִּ֥יר וְקַשְׂקֶ֖שֶׂת בַּמָּ֑יִם שֶׁ֥קֶץ ה֖וּא לָכֶֽם׃

13The following you shall abominate among the birds—they shall not be eaten, they are an abomination: the eagle, the vulture, and the black vulture;

v'-et-E-leh t'-sha-k'-TZU min ha-o-F lo ye-a-KHE-lu SHE-kets HEM et ha-NE-sher v'-et ha-PE-res v'-et ha-o-z'-ni-YAH

יגוְאֶת־אֵ֙לֶּה֙ תְּשַׁקְּצ֣וּ מִן־הָע֔וֹף לֹ֥א יֵאָכְל֖וּ שֶׁ֣קֶץ הֵ֑ם אֶת־הַנֶּ֙שֶׁר֙ וְאֶת־הַפֶּ֔רֶס וְאֵ֖ת הָעׇזְנִיָּֽה׃

14the kite, falcons of every variety;

v'-et ha-da-AH v'-et ha-a-YAH l'-mi-NAH

ידוְאֶ֨ת־הַדָּאָ֔ה וְאֶת־הָאַיָּ֖ה לְמִינָֽהּ׃

15all varieties of raven;

et kol-o-REV l'-mi-NO

טואֵ֥ת כׇּל־עֹרֵ֖ב לְמִינֽוֹ׃

16the ostrich, the nighthawk, the sea gull; hawks of every variety;

v'-ET bat ha-ya-a-NAH v'-et ha-takh-MAS v'-et ha-sha-KHAF v'-et ha-NEtz l'-mi-NE-hu

טזוְאֵת֙ בַּ֣ת הַֽיַּעֲנָ֔ה וְאֶת־הַתַּחְמָ֖ס וְאֶת־הַשָּׁ֑חַף וְאֶת־הַנֵּ֖ץ לְמִינֵֽהוּ׃

17the little owl, the cormorant, and the great owl;

v'-et ha-KOS v'-et ha-SHA-lakh v'-et ha-yan-SHUF

יזוְאֶת־הַכּ֥וֹס וְאֶת־הַשָּׁלָ֖ךְ וְאֶת־הַיַּנְשֽׁוּף׃

18the white owl, the pelican, and the bustard;

v'-et ha-tin-SHE-met v'-et ha-ka-AT v'-et ha-ra-KHAM

יחוְאֶת־הַתִּנְשֶׁ֥מֶת וְאֶת־הַקָּאָ֖ת וְאֶת־הָרָחָֽם׃

19the stork; herons of every variety; the hoopoe, and the bat.

v'-ET ha-cha-see-DAH ha-a-na-FAH l'-mi-NAH v'-et ha-du-ki-FAT v'-et ha-a-ta-LEF

יטוְאֵת֙ הַחֲסִידָ֔ה הָאֲנָפָ֖ה לְמִינָ֑הּ וְאֶת־הַדּוּכִיפַ֖ת וְאֶת־הָעֲטַלֵּֽף׃

20All winged swarming things that walk on fours shall be an abomination for you.

KOL she-RETZ ha-OOF ha-ho-LEKH al-ar-BA, SHE-ketz HU la-KHEM.

ככֹּ֚ל שֶׁ֣רֶץ הָע֔וֹף הַהֹלֵ֖ךְ עַל־אַרְבַּ֑ע שֶׁ֥קֶץ ה֖וּא לָכֶֽם׃

21But these you may eat among all the winged swarming things that walk on fours: all that have, above their feet, jointed legs to leap with on the ground

akh et-ZEH to-KHE-lu mi-KOL she-RETZ ha-OOF ha-ho-LEKH al-ar-BA a-SHER [LO] k'-ra-A-yim mi-MAL le-ra-G'-LAV l'-na-TER ba-HEN al-ha-A-retz

כאאַ֤ךְ אֶת־זֶה֙ תֹּֽאכְל֔וּ מִכֹּל֙ שֶׁ֣רֶץ הָע֔וֹף הַהֹלֵ֖ךְ עַל־אַרְבַּ֑ע אֲשֶׁר־[ל֤וֹ] (לא) כְרָעַ֙יִם֙ מִמַּ֣עַל לְרַגְלָ֔יו לְנַתֵּ֥ר בָּהֵ֖ן עַל־הָאָֽרֶץ׃

22of these you may eat the following: locusts of every variety; all varieties of bald locust; crickets of every variety; and all varieties of grasshopper.

et-E-leh me-HEM to-KHE-lu et-ha-ar-BEH le-mi-NO ve-et-ha-SO-le-AM le-mi-NE-hu ve-et-ha-KHAR-gol le-mi-NE-hu ve-et-he-KHA-gav le-mi-NE-hu

כבאֶת־אֵ֤לֶּה מֵהֶם֙ תֹּאכֵ֔לוּ אֶת־הָֽאַרְבֶּ֣ה לְמִינ֔וֹ וְאֶת־הַסׇּלְעָ֖ם לְמִינֵ֑הוּ וְאֶת־הַחַרְגֹּ֣ל לְמִינֵ֔הוּ וְאֶת־הֶחָגָ֖ב לְמִינֵֽהוּ׃

23But all other winged swarming things that have four legs shall be an abomination for you.

v'-KOL sher-ETZ ha-oF a-SHER-lo ar-BA ra-gla-YIM she-KETZ hu la-KHEM

כגוְכֹל֙ שֶׁ֣רֶץ הָע֔וֹף אֲשֶׁר־ל֖וֹ אַרְבַּ֣ע רַגְלָ֑יִם שֶׁ֥קֶץ ה֖וּא לָכֶֽם׃

24And the following shall make you unclean—whoever touches their carcasses shall be unclean until evening,

u-l'-AY-leh ti-ta-MA-u, kol ha-NO-gay-a b'-niv-la-TAM yit-MA ad ha-a-REV

כדוּלְאֵ֖לֶּה תִּטַּמָּ֑אוּ כׇּל־הַנֹּגֵ֥עַ בְּנִבְלָתָ֖ם יִטְמָ֥א עַד־הָעָֽרֶב׃

25and whoever carries the carcasses of any of them shall wash his clothes and be unclean until evening

v'-KOL ha-no-SAY mi-niv-la-TAM ye-ka-BES b'-ga-DAV v'-ta-MAY ad ha-a-REV

כהוְכׇל־הַנֹּשֵׂ֖א מִנִּבְלָתָ֑ם יְכַבֵּ֥ס בְּגָדָ֖יו וְטָמֵ֥א עַד־הָעָֽרֶב׃

26every animal that has true hoofs but without clefts through the hoofs, or that does not chew the cud. They are unclean for you; whoever touches them shall be unclean.

l'-KOL ha-b'-HE-mah a-SHER hi V'-ma-f'-RET pa-R'-SAH v'-SHE-sa a-YE-n'-NAH sho-SA-at v'-ge-RAH a-YE-n'-NAH ma-a-LAH t'-m'-EEM HEM la-KHEM kol ha-NO-gay-a ba-HEM yit-MA

כולְֽכׇל־הַבְּהֵמָ֡ה אֲשֶׁ֣ר הִוא֩ מַפְרֶ֨סֶת פַּרְסָ֜ה וְשֶׁ֣סַע ׀ אֵינֶ֣נָּה שֹׁסַ֗עַת וְגֵרָה֙ אֵינֶ֣נָּה מַעֲלָ֔ה טְמֵאִ֥ים הֵ֖ם לָכֶ֑ם כׇּל־הַנֹּגֵ֥עַ בָּהֶ֖ם יִטְמָֽא׃

27Also all animals that walk on paws, among those that walk on fours, are unclean for you; whoever touches their carcasses shall be unclean until evening.

v'-KOL ho-LEKH al-ka-PAV b'-KOL ha-KHA-yah ha-ho-LE-khet al-ar-BA t'-ME-im HEM la-KHEM, KOL ha-NO-ge-a b'-niv-la-TAM yit-MA ad-ha-a-REV

כזוְכֹ֣ל ׀ הוֹלֵ֣ךְ עַל־כַּפָּ֗יו בְּכׇל־הַֽחַיָּה֙ הַהֹלֶ֣כֶת עַל־אַרְבַּ֔ע טְמֵאִ֥ים הֵ֖ם לָכֶ֑ם כׇּל־הַנֹּגֵ֥עַ בְּנִבְלָתָ֖ם יִטְמָ֥א עַד־הָעָֽרֶב׃

28And anyone who carries their carcasses shall wash his clothes and remain unclean until evening. They are unclean for you.

v'-ha-no-SAY et-niv-la-TAM ye-ka-BES b'-ga-DAV v'-ta-MAY ad-ha-a-REV te-MAY-im HE-ma la-KHEM.

כחוְהַנֹּשֵׂא֙ אֶת־נִבְלָתָ֔ם יְכַבֵּ֥ס בְּגָדָ֖יו וְטָמֵ֣א עַד־הָעָ֑רֶב טְמֵאִ֥ים הֵ֖מָּה לָכֶֽם׃

29The following shall be unclean for you from among the things that swarm on the earth: the mole, the mouse, and great lizards of every variety;

v'-ZEH la-KHEM ha-ta-MAY ba-sh'-RETZ ha-sh'-RETZ al ha-A-retz ha-KHO-led v'-ha-a-kh'-BAR v'-ha-TZAV l'-mi-NE-hu

כטוְזֶ֤ה לָכֶם֙ הַטָּמֵ֔א בַּשֶּׁ֖רֶץ הַשֹּׁרֵ֣ץ עַל־הָאָ֑רֶץ הַחֹ֥לֶד וְהָעַכְבָּ֖ר וְהַצָּ֥ב לְמִינֵֽהוּ׃

30the gecko, the land crocodile, the lizard, the sand lizard, and the Hameleon.

v'-ha-a-na-KAH v'-ha-KO-akh v'-ha-l'-TAH v'-ha-KHO-met v'-ha-tin-SHA-met

לוְהָאֲנָקָ֥ה וְהַכֹּ֖חַ וְהַלְּטָאָ֑ה וְהַחֹ֖מֶט וְהַתִּנְשָֽׁמֶת׃

31Those are for you the unclean among all the swarming things; whoever touches them when they are dead shall be unclean until evening.

AY-leh ha-t'-m'-EEM la-KHEM b'-KOL ha-sha-RETZ, kol ha-NO-gay-a ba-HEM b'-mo-TAM yit-MA ad ha-a-REV.

לאאֵ֛לֶּה הַטְּמֵאִ֥ים לָכֶ֖ם בְּכׇל־הַשָּׁ֑רֶץ כׇּל־הַנֹּגֵ֧עַ בָּהֶ֛ם בְּמֹתָ֖ם יִטְמָ֥א עַד־הָעָֽרֶב׃

32And anything on which one of them falls when dead shall be unclean: be it any article of wood, or a cloth, or a skin, or a sack—any such article that can be put to use shall be dipped in water, and it shall remain unclean until evening; then it shall be clean.

v'-KOL a-SHER yip-OL-a-LAV me-HEM b'-mo-TAM yit-MA mi-KOL k'-LI-ETZ o-VE-ged o-OR o-SAK kol k'-LI a-SHER ye-a-SEH m'-la-KHA ba-HEM ba-MA-yim yu-VA v'-ta-MAY ad-ha-E-rev v'-ta-HER

לבוְכֹ֣ל אֲשֶׁר־יִפֹּל־עָלָיו֩ מֵהֶ֨ם ׀ בְּמֹתָ֜ם יִטְמָ֗א מִכׇּל־כְּלִי־עֵץ֙ א֣וֹ בֶ֤גֶד אוֹ־עוֹר֙ א֣וֹ שָׂ֔ק כׇּל־כְּלִ֕י אֲשֶׁר־יֵעָשֶׂ֥ה מְלָאכָ֖ה בָּהֶ֑ם בַּמַּ֧יִם יוּבָ֛א וְטָמֵ֥א עַד־הָעֶ֖רֶב וְטָהֵֽר׃

33And if any of those falls into an earthen vessel, everything inside it shall be unclean and [the vessel] itself you shall break.

v'-kol k'-lee-khe-RESH a-SHER yi-POL may-HEM el TO-kho, kol a-SHER b'-TO-kho yit-MA v'-o-TO tish-BO-ru

לגוְכׇ֨ל־כְּלִי־חֶ֔רֶשׂ אֲשֶׁר־יִפֹּ֥ל מֵהֶ֖ם אֶל־תּוֹכ֑וֹ כֹּ֣ל אֲשֶׁ֧ר בְּתוֹכ֛וֹ יִטְמָ֖א וְאֹת֥וֹ תִשְׁבֹּֽרוּ׃

34As to any food that may be eaten, it shall become unclean if it came in contact with water; as to any liquid that may be drunk, it shall become unclean if it was inside any vessel.

mi-KOL-ha-o-KHEL a-SHER ye-a-KHEL, a-SHER ya-VO a-LAV MA-yim yit-MA, v'-KOL-mash-KEH a-SHER yi-SHA-teh b'-KOL-k'-LEE yit-MA

לדמִכׇּל־הָאֹ֜כֶל אֲשֶׁ֣ר יֵאָכֵ֗ל אֲשֶׁ֨ר יָב֥וֹא עָלָ֛יו מַ֖יִם יִטְמָ֑א וְכׇל־מַשְׁקֶה֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר יִשָּׁתֶ֔ה בְּכׇל־כְּלִ֖י יִטְמָֽא׃

35Everything on which the carcass of any of them falls shall be unclean: an oven or stove shall be smashed. They are unclean and unclean they shall remain for you.

v'-KOL a-SHER yip-OL mi-ni-v'-la-TAM a-LA-yo, yit-MA, ta-NUR v'-ki-RA-yim yu-TATZ te-ME-im HEM, u-te-ME-im yi-HU lu-KHEM.

להוְ֠כֹ֠ל אֲשֶׁר־יִפֹּ֨ל מִנִּבְלָתָ֥ם ׀ עָלָיו֮ יִטְמָא֒ תַּנּ֧וּר וְכִירַ֛יִם יֻתָּ֖ץ טְמֵאִ֣ים הֵ֑ם וּטְמֵאִ֖ים יִהְי֥וּ לָכֶֽם׃

36However, a spring or cistern in which water is collected shall be clean, but whoever touches such a carcass in it shall be unclean.

akh ma-YAN u-VOR mik-VEH-MA-yim yi-HEH ta-HOR v'-no-GAY-a b'-niv-la-TAM yi-t'-MA

לואַ֣ךְ מַעְיָ֥ן וּב֛וֹר מִקְוֵה־מַ֖יִם יִהְיֶ֣ה טָה֑וֹר וְנֹגֵ֥עַ בְּנִבְלָתָ֖ם יִטְמָֽא׃

37If such a carcass falls upon seed grain that is to be sown, it is clean;

v'-khee yi-POL mi-niv-la-TAM al-KOL-ze-RA ze-ru-A a-SHER yi-za-RE-a, ta-HOR HU

לזוְכִ֤י יִפֹּל֙ מִנִּבְלָתָ֔ם עַל־כׇּל־זֶ֥רַע זֵר֖וּעַ אֲשֶׁ֣ר יִזָּרֵ֑עַ טָה֖וֹר הֽוּא׃

38but if water is put on the seed and any part of a carcass falls upon it, it shall be unclean for you.

v'-khee yu-TAN ma-YIM al ze-RA v'-na-FAL mi-niv-la-TAM a-LA-yu ta-MAY hu la-KHEM.

לחוְכִ֤י יֻתַּן־מַ֙יִם֙ עַל־זֶ֔רַע וְנָפַ֥ל מִנִּבְלָתָ֖ם עָלָ֑יו טָמֵ֥א ה֖וּא לָכֶֽם׃

39If an animal that you may eat has died, anyone who touches its carcass shall be unclean until evening;

v'-khee ya-MUT min ha-be-HE-ma a-SHER hi LA-khem l'-okh-LAH ha-NO-ge-a b'-niv-la-TAH yit-MA ad ha-a-REV

לטוְכִ֤י יָמוּת֙ מִן־הַבְּהֵמָ֔ה אֲשֶׁר־הִ֥יא לָכֶ֖ם לְאׇכְלָ֑ה הַנֹּגֵ֥עַ בְּנִבְלָתָ֖הּ יִטְמָ֥א עַד־הָעָֽרֶב׃

40anyone who eats of its carcass shall wash his clothes and remain unclean until evening; and anyone who carries its carcass shall wash his clothes and remain unclean until evening.

v'-ha-o-KHEL mi-niv-la-TAH ye-ka-BES b'-ga-DAV v'-ta-MAY ad-ha-a-REV v'-ha-no-SAY et-niv-la-TAH ye-ka-BES b'-ga-DAV v'-ta-MAY ad-ha-a-REV

מוְהָֽאֹכֵל֙ מִנִּבְלָתָ֔הּ יְכַבֵּ֥ס בְּגָדָ֖יו וְטָמֵ֣א עַד־הָעָ֑רֶב וְהַנֹּשֵׂא֙ אֶת־נִבְלָתָ֔הּ יְכַבֵּ֥ס בְּגָדָ֖יו וְטָמֵ֥א עַד־הָעָֽרֶב׃

41All the things that swarm upon the earth are an abomination; they shall not be eaten.

v'-KOL ha-SHE-retz ha-SHO-retz al ha-A-retz, SHE-ketz HU lo ye-a-KHEL

מאוְכׇל־הַשֶּׁ֖רֶץ הַשֹּׁרֵ֣ץ עַל־הָאָ֑רֶץ שֶׁ֥קֶץ ה֖וּא לֹ֥א יֵאָכֵֽל׃

42You shall not eat, among all things that swarm upon the earth, anything that crawls on its belly, or anything that walks on fours, or anything that has many legs; for they are an abomination.

KOL ho-LEKH al GA-khon v'-KOL ho-LEKH al ar-BA, ad KOL mar-BAY ra-gla-YIM l'-KOL ha-SHE-retz ha-SHO-retz al ha-A-retz, lo to-KHE-lum ki-SHE-kets HEM.

מבכֹּל֩ הוֹלֵ֨ךְ עַל־גָּח֜וֹן וְכֹ֣ל ׀ הוֹלֵ֣ךְ עַל־אַרְבַּ֗ע עַ֚ד כׇּל־מַרְבֵּ֣ה רַגְלַ֔יִם לְכׇל־הַשֶּׁ֖רֶץ הַשֹּׁרֵ֣ץ עַל־הָאָ֑רֶץ לֹ֥א תֹאכְל֖וּם כִּי־שֶׁ֥קֶץ הֵֽם׃

43You shall not draw abomination upon yourselves through anything that swarms; you shall not make yourselves unclean therewith and thus become unclean.

al-t'-sha-K'-tzu et naf-sho-TAY-khem b'-kol ha-SHE-retz ha-sho-RAYTZ v'-lo ti-ta-M'-u ba-HEM v'-nit-MAY-tem BAM

מגאַל־תְּשַׁקְּצוּ֙ אֶת־נַפְשֹׁ֣תֵיכֶ֔ם בְּכׇל־הַשֶּׁ֖רֶץ הַשֹּׁרֵ֑ץ וְלֹ֤א תִֽטַּמְּאוּ֙ בָּהֶ֔ם וְנִטְמֵתֶ֖ם בָּֽם׃

44For I Hashem am your God: you shall sanctify yourselves and be holy, for I am holy. You shall not make yourselves unclean through any swarming thing that moves upon the earth.

ki a-NEE a-do-NAI e-lo-HE-khem, v'-hit-ka-diSH-tem v'-hi-YI-tem ke-do-SHEEM, ki ka-DOSH a-NEE, v'-lo te-ta-me-U et naf-sho-TE-khem b'-kol ha-SHE-retz ha-ro-MES al ha-A-retz.

מדכִּ֣י אֲנִ֣י יְהֹוָה֮ אֱלֹֽהֵיכֶם֒ וְהִתְקַדִּשְׁתֶּם֙ וִהְיִיתֶ֣ם קְדֹשִׁ֔ים כִּ֥י קָד֖וֹשׁ אָ֑נִי וְלֹ֤א תְטַמְּאוּ֙ אֶת־נַפְשֹׁ֣תֵיכֶ֔ם בְּכׇל־הַשֶּׁ֖רֶץ הָרֹמֵ֥שׂ עַל־הָאָֽרֶץ׃

45For I Hashem am He who brought you up from the land of Egypt to be your God: you shall be holy, for I am holy.

KEE a-NEE a-do-NAI ha-ma-a-LEH et-KHEM may-E-retz mitz-RA-yim lih-YOT la-KHEM lay-lo-HEEM vih-yee-TEM k'-do-SHEEM KEE ka-DOSH A-nee

מהכִּ֣י ׀ אֲנִ֣י יְהֹוָ֗ה הַֽמַּעֲלֶ֤ה אֶתְכֶם֙ מֵאֶ֣רֶץ מִצְרַ֔יִם לִהְיֹ֥ת לָכֶ֖ם לֵאלֹהִ֑ים וִהְיִיתֶ֣ם קְדֹשִׁ֔ים כִּ֥י קָד֖וֹשׁ אָֽנִי׃

 11:45   You shall be holy, for I am holy

This verse appears towards the end of the description of the kosher dietary laws. God draws a clear connection between obeying the kosher laws and sustaining a status of holiness. The Bible instructs the Children of Israel to distinguish between things which may be eaten and things which are not to be eaten. In handing these requirements to the Jewish people, Hashem is requiring that they distinguish themselves from the other nations. They are charged with a great responsibility to live a holy life, to follow God’s commandments and to come as close as possible to the holiness of Hashem. Through observance of the kosher dietary laws, the People of Israel are meant to have a positive influence on the rest of the world.

46These are the instructions concerning animals, birds, all living creatures that move in water, and all creatures that swarm on earth,

zo-TA to-RAT ha-be-HE-ma v'-ha-OAF v'-KOL NE-fesh ha-KHA-yah ha-RO-m'-SET ba-MA-yim u-l'-KOL NE-fesh ha-SHO-ret-set al ha-A-retz

מוזֹ֣את תּוֹרַ֤ת הַבְּהֵמָה֙ וְהָע֔וֹף וְכֹל֙ נֶ֣פֶשׁ הַֽחַיָּ֔ה הָרֹמֶ֖שֶׂת בַּמָּ֑יִם וּלְכׇל־נֶ֖פֶשׁ הַשֹּׁרֶ֥צֶת עַל־הָאָֽרֶץ׃

47for distinguishing between the unclean and the clean, between the living things that may be eaten and the living things that may not be eaten.

l'-ha-v'-DEEL BAYN ha-ta-MAY u-vayn ha-ta-HOR u-vayn ha-KHA-yah ha-ne-e-KHE-let u-vayn ha-KHA-yah a-SHER lo tay-A-khel

מזלְהַבְדִּ֕יל בֵּ֥ין הַטָּמֵ֖א וּבֵ֣ין הַטָּהֹ֑ר וּבֵ֤ין הַֽחַיָּה֙ הַֽנֶּאֱכֶ֔לֶת וּבֵין֙ הַֽחַיָּ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֖ר לֹ֥א תֵאָכֵֽל׃
