What is Tzom Gedaliah

Commemorates the assassination of Gedaliah, the governor of Judah in 582 BCE, as recounted in II Kings 25.

When is Tzom Gedaliah

Tishrei 3

Because fasting on Shabbat is prohibited (with the exception of Yom Kippur) when this fast falls on a Saturday it is postponed to Sunday



Customs of Tzom Gedaliah

  • Fasting – Similar to the other minor fast days, eating and drinking is prohibited from dawn until nightfall.
  • Extra LiturgySelichot, liturgical prayers, are added into the morning service (Shacharit)
