What is Tzom Gedaliah

Commemorates the assassination of Gedaliah, the governor of Judah in 582 BCE, as recounted in II Kings 25.

When is Tzom Gedaliah

Tishrei 3

Because fasting on Shabbat is prohibited (with the exception of Yom Kippur) when this fast falls on a Saturday it is postponed to Sunday

In the seventh month, Ishmael son of Nethaniah son of Elishama, who was of royal descent, came with ten men, and they struck down Gedalya and he died; [they also killed] the Judeans and the Chaldeans who were present with him at Mitzpa.

Customs of Tzom Gedaliah
  • Fasting – Similar to the other minor fast days, eating and drinking is prohibited from dawn until nightfall.
  • Extra Liturgy – Selichot, liturgical prayers, are added into the morning service (Shacharit)
