On the day before Israelā€™s Independence Day, the nation remembers the Israel Defense Forces soldiers and civilian victims of terror who sacrificed their lives for the State of Israel.

Customs of Yom Hazikaron

  • National Siren – There are two commemorative national sirens that are sounded. There is a 1 minute siren at 8.00pm during the initial evening, while at 11.00am the next day there is another siren lasting for 2 minutes.
  • Visiting Burial Sites – Many Israelis use the day as an opportunity to visit the resting place of close friends and loved ones.
  • Memorial Services – Israelā€™s top leaders and military staff attend national ceremonies of remembrance. Memorial candles are lit in homes, army camps, schools, synagogues, and public places, and flags are lowered to half staff. Throughout the day, serving and retired military personnel serve as honor guards at war memorials throughout the country, and the families of the fallen participate in memorial ceremonies at military cemeteries.
  • Prayers for the fallen – Yizkor and Kel Malei Rachamim are recited. Some also recite Psalm 9 and Psalm 144.
