This day in Israel is marked with nationwide memorials to remember the atrocities of the Holocaust. The date chosen commemorates the start of the Warsaw Ghetto uprising.

Customs of Yom Hashoah

  • Siren – In Israel a siren is blasted throughout the country for 2 minutes at 10am. The country stops to show respect to those who were killed during the Holocaust.
  • Ceremonies commemorating the Holocaust – almost every Jewish community around the world holds a ceremony including prayers, speeches by community leaders, often a testimonial given by a survivor, and the telling of stories from the Holocaust. 
  • Lighting candles in memory of those lost – candles are often lit to remember those who lost their lives in the Holocaust- the flame symbolizes the departed souls.
