Customs of Yom Hashoah

  • Siren – In Israel a siren is blasted throughout the country for 2 minutes at 10am. The country stops to show respect to those who were killed during the Holocaust.
  • Ceremonies commemorating the Holocaust – almost every Jewish community around the world holds a ceremony including prayers, speeches by community leaders, often a testimonial given by a survivor, and the telling of stories from the Holocaust.Ā 
  • Lighting candles in memory of those lost – candles are often lit to remember those who lost their lives in the Holocaust- the flame symbolizes the departed souls.
