Yom Ha’atzmaut celebrates the day the State of Israel was declared independent in May 1948. Today it is celebrated with fireworks and barbecues.

Customs of Yom Haatzmaut

  • Having a barbeque – many Israelis celebrate the day by having a barbeque, often in the local park.
  • Wearing blue and white it is customary to wear the colors of the Israeli flag, blue and white.
  • Attaching Israeli flags to one’s car – many people attach flags to their cars as a symbol of pride in their country.
  • Flag parades – this is often an event for the whole family, with Israeli music blasting and almost every participant waving a huge Israeli flag.
