The Time is Now!

July 24, 2024

The Book of Numbers is replete with setbacks for the children of Israel. Time and again, they face obstacles – sometimes of their own doing, other times imposed by external forces. Wars, potential curses, and their own shortcomings create a seemingly endless cycle of challenges. But then, amidst another round of idol worship and corruption, Phinehas enters the picture. And let’s say, he really puts the Kibosh in the cycle of doom for the Israelites. Quite literally.

In Numbers 25:7-8, we read:

Phinehas’ decisive action halts a plague and earns him a divine reward: the covenant of an everlasting priesthood. His zeal for God’s honor becomes a turning point in Israel’s journey.

But what does a modern-day Phinehas look like? What does it take to embody that zeal, that passion in our times?

Today, as the world often seems set against us as Jews and as by extension people who follow God’s will through the Bible, we need to channel the spirit of Phinehas more than ever. Recently, I overheard a coworker say, “Don’t be an October 6th advocate; be an October 8th advocate.” This powerful statement encapsulates a crucial lesson: don’t wait for calamity to strike. Don’t assume the world embraces you and your values unconditionally.

On October 8th, 2023, the battle cry of the Jewish people resounded as one. We were unified with righteous indignation, moral clarity, and a demand for justice in the wake of the October 7th attacks. Most importantly, it was a moment to stand up for our God-given land.

Be a Phinehas.

This call extends beyond the Jewish people. It applies to all who see clearly, without rose-colored glasses, the need to stand against antisemitism and hatred while defending our freedoms – not just as Jews, but as people of faith and conscience.

Be a Phinehas.

In Leviticus 19:16, we find a powerful injunction that speaks to this very idea:

Today’s Phinehas figures might be seen by some as zealots in a world where any form of religious conviction is often dismissed as extremism. Yet, Christian allies and supporters are growing in numbers, recognizing the importance of standing with Israel and against antisemitism.

The Christian supporters of Israel and the Bible embody the spirit of Phinehas in their own way. They stand firm in their belief that supporting Israel is not just a political stance but a moral and spiritual imperative. Many see their support for Israel as a fulfillment of biblical prophecy and a way to bless the descendants of Abraham.

Be a Phinehas.

Being a modern-day Phinehas doesn’t mean resorting to violence. Instead, it means having the courage to stand up for what’s right, even when it’s unpopular. It means being an “October 8th Advocate” – prepared, vigilant, and ready to defend our values and our people.

What would arouse our righteous indignation today? What in Jewish life, or in our shared values as people of faith, would galvanize us into action? Is there something that would incense us enough to take a stand?

In our politically correct world, where tolerance often means accepting everything without question, we must ask ourselves: Where do we draw the line? What is our bottom line?

Being a Phinehas means having that bottom line – a set of principles we refuse to compromise, values we’re willing to defend passionately. It means being willing to speak out against injustice, to challenge antisemitism in all its forms, and to support Israel’s right to exist and defend itself.

For some, it might mean engaging in public advocacy and educating others about Israel’s history and current challenges. For others, it could involve supporting organizations that build bridges between Jews, Christians, and all who share our faith-based values.

Being a Phinehas in the modern world means staying informed, being ready to counter misinformation, and having the courage to speak truth to power. It means refusing to be silenced by intimidation or the fear of being labeled intolerant.

As we face growing antisemitism and attacks on religious freedom worldwide, the spirit of Phinehas is needed now more than ever. We must be willing to stand up, speak out, and act decisively in defense of our shared values and the right to live and worship freely.

Be a Phinehas.

Don’t wait for the next crisis to push you into action. Be prepared, and be courageous. In doing so, we honor the legacy of those who came before us and pave the way for a future where faith, freedom, and mutual respect can flourish.

Let us draw strength from our history. Let us be modern-day Phinehas figures, standing firm in our convictions, ready to stand up for what is truly right.

Be a Phinehas.
The time is now.
