The Cyrus Curse: How Britain Failed Its Divine Mission and Lost Its Soul

The nation of England stands at the precipice of collapse. Once the mighty British Empire ruled a quarter of the globe, but today it cannot even control its own streets. Muslim populations are growing rapidly within Britain’s borders, projected to reach 17.2 percent by 2050, while radical elements gain political leverage that will soon give them effective control over the country’s future. Just this week, Israel expelled two British Labour MPs who tried entering the country on false pretenses to document and smear Israeli security forces. The British government’s response was to condemn Israel rather than acknowledge their officials’ deception.

What has happened to England, the great nation that stood bravely against Hitler through World War II and was once the great hope of the Western world? How did this beacon of democracy and strength fall so precipitously from its former glory?

One hundred years ago, Britain was given a divine opportunity similar to that given to King Cyrus of Persia when the Jewish people were in Babylonian exile. The Bible records Cyrus’s divine appointment:

The prophet Isaiah even referred to this pagan king as God’s mashiach (anointed one):

In 1917, Britain issued the Balfour Declaration, supporting Jewish statehood in the Land of Israel. Jewish communities worldwide erupted in celebration. The American Jewish Zionist newspaper, the Maccabaean, termed the declaration “The Jewish Magna Carta.” The American Jewish Chronicle called it “A Turning Point in Jewish History.” In one celebration, a reported crowd of 100,000 danced outside the U.S. Consulate in Odessa.

On December 2, 1917, crowds gathered in the London Opera House for a “Great Thanksgiving Meeting” with over 2,700 in attendance to celebrate the Balfour Declaration. An overflow crowd met simultaneously in the Kingsway Theatre of London. The rally featured members of the British Government and leaders of British Jewry, with speeches portraying the British as liberators of the Jewish people from millennia of suffering.

Rabbi Abraham Isaac Kook, the revered rabbi of Jaffa who happened to be in London during this celebratory gathering, offered a strikingly different message than the other speakers. While British politicians proudly portrayed themselves as liberators of the Jewish people, Rabbi Kook declared: “I have not come here to thank the British nation, but even more, to congratulate it for the privilege of making this declaration. The Jewish nation is the ‘scholar’ among the nations, the ‘people of the book,’ a nation of prophets; and it is a great honor for any nation to aid it.”

Rabbi Kook understood what the British did not – that they had been given a sacred mission by God Himself, and that their faithfulness to this mission would determine their national destiny. He compared the Balfour Declaration to Cyrus’s proclamation, noting in his writings that both leaders were tools of God in bringing salvation and redemption to the Jewish people.

But just as the sages teach that Cyrus himself “went sour” despite his initial righteous declaration, Britain soon abandoned its promises. By 1919, Jewish Legion soldiers who had fought alongside the British to liberate Palestine were barred from entering Jerusalem on Passover. The following year, during Passover of 1920, Arabs rioted in Jerusalem, murdering five Jews and wounding hundreds while British authorities stood by, even allowing Arab police who participated in the violence to retain their positions.

Britain’s betrayal only deepened. As Rabbi Zvi Thau explains: “The English, by impeding the progress of redemption, not only harmed the particular interests of the Jewish people but betrayed the mission assigned to them by Divine Providence.”

The British White Papers restricted Jewish immigration precisely when European Jews most desperately needed a safe haven from Nazi persecution. They trained Jordanian forces that would later fight against Israel. Most damning of all, they closed the gates of the Holy Land to Jewish refugees as the Holocaust consumed European Jewry – condemning hundreds of thousands of Jews to death in Nazi concentration camps solely to appease Arab Muslim interests.

For this betrayal, Britain now reaps divine judgment in a form that mirrors its sin. Having sacrificed Jewish lives to appease Muslim interests, Britain now finds itself being overtaken by the very Muslim population it sought to favor. The divine retribution is precise and fitting: the nation that betrayed God’s chosen people to curry favor with Muslims is now being conquered from within by Muslims. The shocking grooming gang scandal that saw thousands of English girls sexually exploited by predominantly Pakistani Muslim men went unaddressed for decades while officials feared being labeled “racist.” The once great nation that bravely stood up to Hitler now passively stands by as Islamists systematically dismantle its Western values and cultural foundations.

Rabbi Kook warned that if those upon whom Supreme Providence imposed the duty of helping Israel march toward its redemption fail in their divine mission, consequences would surely follow. Britain chose to betray the Jewish people for political expediency with the Arab world, and now finds itself being conquered from within by the very forces it chose to appease.

Today, America stands at a similar crossroads. The Israel-America partnership represents the last line of defense for Western civilization as European nations crumble under the weight of their own moral cowardice. Will America fulfill its divine mission by standing firmly with Israel, or will it follow Britain’s path to national disintegration?

The future of America itself hangs in the balance. President Trump has been a stalwart ally of Israel, perhaps the greatest friend of Israel ever to occupy the White House. But there are many voices within the MAGA world trying to turn him against Israel – people like Tucker Carlson, Ian Carrol, Candace Owens, the Hodgetwins and other influential voices. Will the President continue to stand strong with Israel despite their dark efforts?

The choice America makes today will determine its future. Nations that bless Israel will be blessed; those that curse Israel will be cursed. As America continues to support Israel’s right to its biblical heartland in Judea and Samaria, and recognizes Jewish sovereignty over the territories promised in Scripture, it will not merely survive but thrive as a powerful defender of freedom in our world. While President Biden betrayed Israel repeatedly, President Trump has demonstrated what true alliance with the Jewish state looks like. America now stands at its own Cyrus moment – fulfill its divine mission to stand with Israel, or face the same divine judgment that has befallen Britain.
