Conspiracy theorist and confirmed antisemite Candace Owens recently drew widespread attention for her controversial remarks accusing Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, known as the Lubavitcher Rebbe, of “Jewish supremacism” and harboring “hatred of all non-Jews.”
The most influential and respected rabbi of his time, Rabbi Schneerson – who passed away 30 years ago – dedicated his life to educating Jews across the world and bringing biblical teachings to the public discourse. His legacy includes inspiring millions through his teachings, outreach efforts, and personal engagement with people from diverse backgrounds. Given Rabbi Schneerson’s significance, it is critically important to respond to Candace’s attacks.
To answer her accusation, it is crucial to understand the role and mission of the Jewish people. In a prayer of gratitude to God, David said:
David says that God redeemed Israel from Egypt and made them His chosen nation for one goal: “winning renown for Himself,” or, “to make Him a name.” What does this mean?
Rabbi David Kimche explains that “to make Him a name” means to make God’s name known to the people of the earth. In other words, God set Israel apart so that Israel would be His public relations team here on earth, bringing the teachings of the Bible and an awareness of God’s providence to all of humanity. This mission does not imply superiority, but rather responsibility.
It’s particularly appalling that Candace Owens slandered Rabbi Schneerson, a man who dedicated his life not only to helping and educating the Jewish people, but all of humanity. There are countless stories told about him that demonstrate his dedication to helping people from all walks of life, including non-Jews. He personally responded to thousands of letters from Jews and non-Jews across the world.
In a letter to Mr. Arkadiusz Rybicki, President of the Council for Polish-Jewish Relations, Rabbi Schneerson explained that the Jewish holiday of Rosh Hashanah celebrates the anniversary of the creation of the first man, Adam. He wrote: “Our Sages explain why the creation of man differed from the creation of other living species and why, among other things, man was created as a single individual, unlike other living creatures created in pairs… [For] it was G‑d’s design that the human race, all humans everywhere and at all times, should know that each and all descend from the one and the same single progenitor, a fully developed human being created in the image of G‑d, so that no human being could claim superior ancestral origin; hence would also find it easier to cultivate a real feeling of kinship in all inter-human relationships. Indeed, although Rosh Hashanah is a Jewish festival, our prayers for a Happy New Year also include all the nations and dwellers on earth. And true happiness includes everyone’s peace and prosperity both materially and spiritually.”
Jewish supremacism? Hardly. The real question is: Doesn’t Candace Owens have more constructive ways to spend her time than spreading antisemitic lies about esteemed Jewish leaders?
