- Shechem – After being anointed king over  the Northern Kingdom of Israel, Jeroboam fortified the city of Shechem and settles there, making it the capital of his kingdom (I Kings 12:25).
- Penuel – After settling in Shechem for a short time, Jeroboam moved his capital to Penuel (I Kings 12:25), the place where Yaakov fought with an angel (Genesis 32:31).
- Beit El – Beit El was at the southern end of Jeroboam’s kingdom. It was one of the two locations chosen by Jeroboam in which to create a new center of worship of God and place a golden calf. (I Kings 12:29).
- Dan – Dan was at the northern end of Jeroboam’s kingdom. It was one of the two locations chosen by Jeroboam in which to create a new center of worship of God and place a golden calf. (I Kings 12:29).
- Jerusalem – Jerusalem was the capital of the Kingdom of Judah and the home of the Temple. Jeroboam feared that if the people of his kingdom would continue to worship God in the Temple in Jerusalem, they would return to their old allegiance with the kings of Judah. He therefore created two new centers of worship and declared that the people of his kingdom should not go to Jerusalem to worship God (I Kings 12:26-29).
