12:38 The broad wall

The broad wall in Jerusalem
In recording the procession of the wall’s dedication ceremony, Nehemiah mentions the “broad wall.” During the 1948 War of Independence, the entire Jewish quarter of Jerusalem’s Old City was utterly destroyed. After the 1967 liberation, the quarter’s returning residents wished to rebuild their homes, and in the process, many archeological excavations were carried out. One of the many incredible finds was Dr. Nahman Avigad’s discovery of the seven-meter-wide “broad wall,” mentioned in this verse as well as earlier in Sefer Nehemiah (3:8). It is thought to have been built during the reign of King Chizkiyahu in the late eighth century BCE, as a defensive structure against the expected invasion by King Sennacherib of Assyria. Today, modern apartments surround the ancient wall, enabling a harmonious existence between Jerusalem’s rich past and blessed present.
