1The inhabitants of Yerushalayim made Achazyahu, his youngest son, king in his stead, because all the older ones had been killed by the troops that penetrated the camp with the Arabs. Achazyahu son of Yehoram reigned as king of Yehuda.
2Achazyahu was forty-two years old when he became king, and he reigned in Yerushalayim one year; his mother's name was Atalya daughter of Omri.
3He too followed the practices of the house of Achav, for his mother counseled him to do evil.
4He did what was displeasing to Hashem, like the house of Achav, for they became his counselors after his father's death, to his ruination.
5Moreover, he followed their counsel and marched with Yehoram son of King Achav of Yisrael to battle against King Hazael of Aram at Ramoth-gilead, where the Arameans wounded Yoram.
6He returned to Yizrael to recover from the wounds inflicted on him at Rama when he fought against King Hazael of Aram. King Azarya son of Yehoram of Yehuda went down to Yizrael to visit Yehoram son of Achav while he was ill.
7Hashem caused the downfall of Achazyahu because he visited Yoram. During his visit he went out with Yehoram to Yehu son of Nimshi, whom Hashem had anointed to cut off the house of Achav.
8In the course of bringing the house of Achav to judgment, Yehu came upon the officers of Yehuda and the nephews of Achazyahu, ministers of Achazyahu, and killed them.
9He sent in search of Achazyahu, who was caught hiding in Shomron, was brought to Yehu, and put to death. He was given a burial, because it was said, “He is the son of Yehoshafat who worshiped Hashem wholeheartedly.” So the house of Achazyahu could not muster the strength to rule.
10When Atalya, Achazyahu's mother, learned that her son was dead, she promptly did away with all who were of the royal stock of the house of Yehuda.
11But Yehoshavat, daughter of the king, spirited away Achazyahu's son Yoash from among the princes who were being slain, and put him and his nurse in a bedroom. Yehoshavat, daughter of King Yehoram, wife of the Kohen Yehoyada—she was the sister of Achazyahu—kept him hidden from Atalya so that he was not put to death.
12He stayed with them for six years, hidden in the House of Hashem, while Atalya reigned over the land.
vai-HEE i-TAM b'-VAYT ha-e-lo-HEEM mit-kha-BAY SHAYSH sha-NEEM va-a-tal-YAH mo-LE-khet al ha-A-retz
22:12 Hidden in the House of Hashem
In her desire to rule, Atalya does the unthinkable: She wipes out the entire royal family including her own children and grandchildren. There is, however, one exception. Baby Yoash is hidden by his aunt, Yehoshavat, in the house of God, the Beit Hamikdash in Yerushalayim. It is this spiritual center of the Land of Israel, the house that David longed to build and that was constructed by his son Shlomo, which protects the rightful king and preserves the Davidic line. Through Yehoshavat and her husband Yehoyada the priest, Hashem fulfills His promise to David that “his line shall continue forever, his throne, as the sun before Me,” (Psalms 89:37).
