Though King Shaul had instructed the soldiers of Israel not to eat, his son Yehonatan eats honey, and declares that his father erred by issuing such an order. Rabbi Shlomo Aviner notes that although righteous individuals like King Shaul may be able to fast in battle, soldiers need to eat and drink in order to maintain their physical and emotional strength. Armies need to make sure that their soldiers have high morale so that they can succeed. Today, there are organizations that assist the Israeli Defense Forces by providing soldiers not only with essential items they need for battle, but also with extra amenities, to demonstrate that the IDF has many supporters from around the world who pray and work for their success. This raises the morale of Israel’s soldiers and contributes to the success of their holy mission.
