1The sons of Reuven the first-born of Yisrael. (He was the first-born; but when he defiled his father's bed, his birthright was given to the sons of Yosef son of Yisrael, so he is not reckoned as first-born in the genealogy;
2though Yehuda became more powerful than his brothers and a leader came from him, yet the birthright belonged to Yosef.)
3The sons of Reuven, the first-born of Yisrael: Enoch, Pallu, Chetzron, and Carmi.
4The sons of Yoel: his son Shemaya, his son Gog, his son Shim'i,
5his son Micha, his son Reaiah, his son Baal,
6his son Beerah—whom King Tillegath-pilneser of Assyria exiled—was chieftain of the Rebenites.
7And his kinsmen, by their families, according to their lines in the genealogy: the head, Jeiel, and Zecharya,
8and Bela son of Azaz son of Shema son of Yoel; he dwelt in Aroer as far as Nebo and Baal-meon.
9He also dwelt to the east as far as the fringe of the wilderness this side of the Euphrates, because their cattle had increased in the land of Gilad.
10And in the days of Shaul they made war on the Hagrites, who fell by their hand; and they occupied their tents throughout all the region east of Gilad.
11The sons of Gad dwelt facing them in the land of Bashan as far as Salcah:
12Yoel the chief, Shapham the second, Janai, and Shafat in Bashan.
13And by clans: Michael, Meshullam, Sheba, Jorai, Jacan, Zia, and Ever—seven.
14These were the sons of Avichayil son of Huri son of Jaroah son of Gilad son of Michael son of Jeshishai son of Jahdo son of Buz;
15Ahi son of Abdiel son of Guni was chief of their clan,
16and they dwelt in Gilad, in Bashan, and in its dependencies, and in all the pasturelands of Sharon, to their limits.
17All of them were registered by genealogies in the days of King Yotam of Yehuda, and in the days of King Yerovam of Yisrael.
18The Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Menashe had warriors who carried shield and sword, drew the bow, and were experienced at war—44,760, ready for service.
19They made war on the Hagrites—Jetur, Naphish, and Nodab.
20They prevailed against them; the Hagrites and all who were with them were delivered into their hands, for they cried to Hashem in the battle, and He responded to their entreaty because they trusted in Him.
va-yay-a-z'-RU a-lay-HEM va-yi-na-t'-NU v'-ya-DAM ha-hag-ree-EEM v'-KHOL she-i-ma-HEM KEE lay-lo-HEEM za-a-KU ba-mil-kha-MAH v'-na-TOR la-HEM kee VA-t'-khu VO
5:20 For they cried to Hashem in the battle
In the previous verses, we are told that the combined forces of the tribes of Reuven, Gad and Menashe numbered an impressive 44,760 troops of exceptional quality. And yet, we are told that the reason they were victorious in battle is because they trusted in Hashem and believed that He would help them and save them. As we have seen numerous times throughout Tanakh, success in the Land of Israel is not tied to physical capability and effort alone, though these are very important, but also to faith and trust in God.
21They carried off their livestock: 50,000 of their camels, 250,000 sheep, 2,000 asses, and 100,000 people.
22For many fell slain, because it was Hashem's battle. And they dwelt in their place until the exile.
23The members of the half-tribe of Menashe dwelt in the land; they were very numerous from Bashan to Baal-hermon, Senir, and Mount Chermon.
24These were the chiefs of their clans: Epher, Ishi, Eliel, Azriel, Yirmiyahu, Hodaviah, and Jahdiel, men of substance, famous men, chiefs of their clans.
25But they trespassed against the God of their fathers by going astray after the gods of the peoples of the land, whom Hashem had destroyed before them.
26So the God of Yisrael roused the spirit of King Pul of Assyria—the spirit of King Tillegath-pilneser of Assyria—and he carried them away, namely, the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Menashe, and brought them to Halah, Habor, Hara, and the river Gozan, to this day.
27The sons of Levi: Gershon, Kehat, and Merari.
28The sons of Kehat: Amram, Izhar, Chevron, and Uzziel.
29The children of Amram: Aharon, Moshe, and Miriam. The sons of Aharon: Nadav, Avihu, Elazar, and Itamar.
