I - Chapter 14

1King Hiram of Tyre sent envoys to David with cedar logs, stonemasons, and carpenters to build a palace for him.

אוַיִּשְׁלַח חירם [חוּרָם] מֶלֶךְ־צֹר מַלְאָכִים אֶל־דָּוִיד וַעֲצֵי אֲרָזִים וְחָרָשֵׁי קִיר וְחָרָשֵׁי עֵצִים לִבְנוֹת לוֹ בָּיִת׃

2Thus David knew that Hashem had established him as king over Yisrael, and that his kingship was highly exalted for the sake of His people Yisrael.

בוַיֵּדַע דָּוִיד כִּי־הֱכִינוֹ יְהֹוָה לְמֶלֶךְ עַל־יִשְׂרָאֵל כִּי־נִשֵּׂאת לְמַעְלָה מַלְכוּתוֹ בַּעֲבוּר עַמּוֹ יִשְׂרָאֵל׃

3David took more wives in Yerushalayim, and David begot more sons and daughters.

גוַיִּקַּח דָּוִיד עוֹד נָשִׁים בִּירוּשָׁלָ ִם וַיּוֹלֶד דָּוִיד עוֹד בָּנִים וּבָנוֹת׃

4These are the names of the children born to him in Yerushalayim: Shammua, Shobab, Natan, and Shlomo;

דוְאֵלֶּה שְׁמוֹת הַיְלוּדִים אֲשֶׁר הָיוּ־לוֹ בִּירוּשָׁלָ ִם שַׁמּוּעַ וְשׁוֹבָב נָתָן וּשְׁלֹמֹה׃

5Ibhar, Elishua, and Elpelet;

הוְיִבְחָר וֶאֱלִישׁוּעַ וְאֶלְפָּלֶט׃

6Nogah, Nepheg, and Japhia;

ווְנֹגַהּ וְנֶפֶג וְיָפִיעַ׃

7Elishama, Beeliada, and Eliphelet.

זוֶאֱלִישָׁמָע וּבְעֶלְיָדָע וֶאֱלִיפָלֶט׃

8When the Philistines heard that David had been anointed king over all Yisrael, all the Philistines went up in search of David; but David heard of it, and he went out to them.

חוַיִּשְׁמְעוּ פְלִשְׁתִּים כִּי־נִמְשַׁח דָּוִיד לְמֶלֶךְ עַל־כָּל־יִשְׂרָאֵל וַיַּעֲלוּ כָל־פְּלִשְׁתִּים לְבַקֵּשׁ אֶת־דָּוִיד וַיִּשְׁמַע דָּוִיד וַיֵּצֵא לִפְנֵיהֶם׃

9The Philistines came and raided the Valley of Rephaim.

טוּפְלִשְׁתִּים בָּאוּ וַיִּפְשְׁטוּ בְּעֵמֶק רְפָאִים׃

10David inquired of Hashem, “Shall I go up against the Philistines? Will You deliver them into my hands?” And Hashem answered him, “Go up, and I will deliver them into your hands.”

va-yish-AL da-VEED bay-lo-HEEM lay-MOR ha-e-e-LEH al p'-lish-TEEM un-ta-TAM b'-ya-DEE va-YO-mer LO a-do-NAI a-LAY un-ta-TEEM b'-ya-DE-kha

יוַיִּשְׁאַל דָּוִיד בֵּאלֹהִים לֵאמֹר הַאֶעֱלֶה עַל־פלשתיים [פְּלִשְׁתִּים] וּנְתַתָּם בְּיָדִי וַיֹּאמֶר לוֹ יְהֹוָה עֲלֵה וּנְתַתִּים בְּיָדֶךָ׃

11Thereupon David ascended Baal-perazim, and David defeated them there. David said, “Hashem burst out against my enemies by my hands as waters burst out.” That is why that place was named Baal-perazim.

יאוַיַּעֲלוּ בְּבַעַל־פְּרָצִים וַיַּכֵּם שָׁם דָּוִיד וַיֹּאמֶר דָּוִיד פָּרַץ הָאֱלֹהִים אֶת־אוֹיְבַי בְּיָדִי כְּפֶרֶץ מָיִם עַל־כֵּן קָרְאוּ שֵׁם־הַמָּקוֹם הַהוּא בַּעַל פְּרָצִים׃

12They abandoned their gods there, and David ordered these to be burned.

יבוַיַּעַזְבוּ־שָׁם אֶת־אֱלֹהֵיהֶם וַיֹּאמֶר דָּוִיד וַיִּשָּׂרְפוּ בָּאֵשׁ׃

13Once again the Philistines raided the valley.

יגוַיֹּסִיפוּ עוֹד פְּלִשְׁתִּים וַיִּפְשְׁטוּ בָּעֵמֶק׃

14David inquired of Hashem once more, and Hashem answered, “Do not go up after them, but circle around them and confront them at the baca trees.

ידוַיִּשְׁאַל עוֹד דָּוִיד בֵּאלֹהִים וַיֹּאמֶר לוֹ הָאֱלֹהִים לֹא תַעֲלֶה אַחֲרֵיהֶם הָסֵב מֵעֲלֵיהֶם וּבָאתָ לָהֶם מִמּוּל הַבְּכָאִים׃

15And when you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the baca trees, then go out to battle, for Hashem will be going in front of you to attack the Philistine forces.”

טווִיהִי כְּשָׁמְעֲךָ אֶת־קוֹל הַצְּעָדָה בְּרָאשֵׁי הַבְּכָאִים אָז תֵּצֵא בַמִּלְחָמָה כִּי־יָצָא הָאֱלֹהִים לְפָנֶיךָ לְהַכּוֹת אֶת־מַחֲנֵה פְלִשְׁתִּים׃

16David did as Hashem had commanded him; and they routed the Philistines from Givon all the way to Gezer.

טזוַיַּעַשׂ דָּוִיד כַּאֲשֶׁר צִוָּהוּ הָאֱלֹהִים וַיַּכּוּ אֶת־מַחֲנֵה פְלִשְׁתִּים מִגִּבְעוֹן וְעַד־גָּזְרָה׃

17David became famous throughout the lands, and Hashem put the fear of him in all the nations.

יזוַיֵּצֵא שֵׁם־דָּוִיד בְּכָל־הָאֲרָצוֹת וַיהֹוָה נָתַן אֶת־פַּחְדּוֹ עַל־כָּל־הַגּוֹיִם׃
