Jochebed was the wife of Amram and mother of Aaron, Miriam and Moses. When Pharaoh passed an edict that all baby boys be thrown into the Nile, Jochebed took brave action and hid her son, Moses, for three months. When she could no longer hide him, she lovingly placed him in a basket and set him in the Nile, where he was found and saved by Pharaoh’s daughter (Exodus 2:1-10). According to the Sages, Jochebed was the midwife Shifra who courageously defied Pharaoh’s orders to kill the Jewish baby boys. Jochebed was also the daughter of Levi, born to him in Egypt (Numbers 26:59).
