Can Wealthy People Be Holy?

In this presentation, Rabbi Rami Goldberg, representing Israel 365, explores the relationship between wealth and holiness, challenging the traditional notion that spiritual individuals should shun material wealth. Growing up, he associated holiness with simplicity, detachment, and lack of possessions. However, he highlights that biblical figures like Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob were wealthy and maintained their wealth without giving it all away for an ascetic lifestyle. The reason, he explains, is that wealth enabled them to fulfill a mission of influencing others and spreading belief in God.

Rabbi Rami discusses how Abraham used his wealth as a tool to attract others, providing hospitality and teaching them about God as the provider of all. This mission-driven approach is also evident in the strategic location of Israel at the crossroads of civilization. Israel’s success as a “startup nation” and its economic achievements are framed as part of its divine mission to be a moral and spiritual example for the world.

Goldberg emphasizes that wealth is not inherently bad, but a responsibility and a resource to improve the world. Wealthy individuals should use their financial success to positively impact others and acknowledge God as the ultimate source of their blessings. The discussion concludes with an invitation to support Israel 365’s mission of spreading biblical teachings and promoting God’s land through responsible use of wealth.
